LETTER: Don Graeter remembers excitement on first reading Joseph Altsheler One "cave country" connection I left out of the Buelah Villa story in theinterest of brevity was regarding Kentucky author Joseph A. Altsheler. I found an interesting looking book in the school library in the 5th gradeentitled Rulers of the Lakes. It had fellas in coon skin caps shooting flintlocks from a canoe. That was right up my alley. I learned that this was from a series on the French and Indian War by Altsheler. By a year later my mother had figured out that she could special order others in the series from the old W.K. Stewart's bookstore in Louisville. I pulled one out at Sulphur Well one summer and Gran's eyes lit up as she told me she knew "Joe" Altsheler, who was from Horse Cave. We talked a long time about Altsheler and his family. His books are long out of print and very expensive now (one recently went for over $600 on ebay!). So maybe there's something there also. Don Graeter Editor's note: Joseph Altsheler ("All-shler") was, at one time, the most popular writer of boy's adventure books in America. He was born at Three Springs, in Hart County, near the Green and Metcalfe County borders. A historical marker in the tin community commemorates the famous author.
