Adair Co. Extension Service Can Opener Drive

From Dylan Gentry

In honor of Sue Stivers, the Adair County Homemakers are collecting can openers to benefit those in need in Eastern Kentucky. Sue was an excellent supporter of the community, always giving back. In this same spirit, the Adair County Homemakers have determined that flood recovery would be a worthy cause to honor her.

Manual can openers can be dropped off at the extension office from August 8 through August 11, 2022. The can openers will be delivered to Breathitt County on August 12 to be distributed. Can openers that can be used easily by senior citizens are preferred. You may call (270) 384-2317 with any questions.

Donations can be brought by Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, any time from Monday, August 8 until Thursday, August 11, 2022.

Homemakers leaving with donations for flood victims

2022-08-14 - Columbia, KY - Photo from Dylan Gentry, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent.
The Adair and Green County Homemakers traveled to Eastern, KY to deliver much needed supplies. They were proud to have collected 200 can openers as well as box fans, coolers, cleaning supplies, and other equipment. They helped out for about four hours before making the two-and-a-half-hour trip back to Columbia and Greensburg. They went first to the Breathitt County Extension Office and then to the edge of Perry County. Members reported having seen so much devastation - water in homes and businesses, mattresses that had been lodged in trees - debris everywhere. The flood victims are grateful for all donations and help and they say, "please don't forget us."
