Letter: Dr Roop association of opioid crisis in KY

Comments re: Roop appointed to KY Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission

Mary Bardin writes:

The opioid and substance abuse crisis is at an all time level in KY with emphasis on South Central KY. So many people have lost their lives, families, income and their inner soul because of addictions. Yet, we still do not seem to treat the root of the evil.

The pharmaceutical companies have shared the blame, and thanks to Attorney Cameron, have paid the price. Addiction is in almost every family in some way or fashion. Yet, we continue to incarcerate without providing a solution. We need more programs in our justice system as well as in our communities. The counties that provide prevention programs have proven the fact that the number of fatalities is less when prevention is implemented. I see folks struggle after incarceration, trying to re-establish a "somewhat normal life."

These folks are put out to the street with no money, no clothes, no family or community support and no means to overcome these barriers. When the KY Attorney General won this huge lawsuit, he said the money would be disbursed to the counties for use to get this crisis to a more manageable level. I am very proud to hear Dr. Roop is on this committee. He has the ability to make a difference and show a different mind set in our communities.

I have heard people make statement such as" he/she is just an ol drug addict, or he/she is just an old alcoholic." Likely that person is someone's husband, wife, mother, father, brother, sister, aunt uncle, best friend. That may actually be someone very dear to our own family. As a community, let's please support Dr Roop and the committee to show a change in the substance abuse crisis.
