William Thomas (Tommy) Winfrey, 89, Adair Co., KY (1933-2022)

William Thomas "Tommy" Winfrey passed away on May 26, 2022. He was 89 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 3pmCT on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY. Burial will follow in the Holt Cemetery.

Visitation is requested after 1pmCT on Saturday.


He was born January 14, 1933 in Crocus, Kentucky, to the late Thomas and Georgia (Sallee) Winfrey.

Tommy accepted Jesus as his Savior at an early age at Cedar Groves Baptist Church. He attended Cedar Groves Elementary School and Jackman High School. After graduation he worked a while in Louisville, but ultimately returned home to Crocus to run a successful dairy farm. He enjoyed coon hunting and performing in a local gospel singing group with the Jones and Philpot brothers.

Tommy married Mary Florence (Weathers) Winfrey in November 1955. Their union was blessed with four children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Georgia Winfrey; brothers Walter Winfrey, James "Buddy" Winfrey, Norman Winfrey, Frank Winfrey and Wendell Winfrey; and sisters Nora Lee Garrison and Gloria Calhoun.

He leaves to mourn:
  • His wife - Mary Florence Winfrey of Glens Fork
  • Four children - George Winfrey (Michelle) of Louisville, Maria Franklin of Louisville, Vincent Winfrey (Avis) of Embry, Alabama and Mark Winfrey of Georgetown, Kentucky
  • Grandchildren - Denise Watkins-McMillion (Richard) Travis Winfrey, Ryan McMorris, George Winfrey (Tamica), Yolonda Webb (Thomas), Donald "Trae" Franklin, Desmond Franklin (Neosha), Dillon Winfrey, Mark "Isaac" Winfrey, Joshua Winfrey and Anna Winfrey
  • His sisters - Harlene Hartwell of California, Kathrine Sylvas (Lionel) of Louisville and Cynthia Bowling of California
  • A host of loving relatives
