ISP calls for host parents in the new year

By Anna Peterson
Assistant Director of ISP

'Twas the week before Christmas and at the ISP House, everyone was stirring... and while most of us are getting ready for the most wonderful time of the year, students all over the world are preparing for the most exciting time of their life as they get ready to travel to the U.S. to study at Lindsey Wilson College.

Most of our international students join us for a fall semester, but we always have about 20 international students enroll for the spring semester. LWC ISP (International Student Programs) is fortunate enough to partner with folks from the local community who are willing to host and befriend these students during the school year. Host families DO NOT provide housing for the students. Instead, host families provide a friendship and a support system here in America to make the transition to and time in the U.S. a little bit easier. ISP is currently asking for new families to join the program and help create a friendly, comforting, home-away-from-home atmosphere here at LWC for each international student.

What is a traditional host "family?" The answer is the same as if one were to ask "what is a typical American tradition?" Host families, like traditions, come in all shapes and sizes and are what you make them! It is what makes YOU a family, it is what is YOUR tradition.

Let's hear a heartfelt comment by one of our newer members of the program, host parent Scott Dillary, who says that "Being a host family for one international student has helped me to be more aware of the situations for all international students and to consider how I might aid in their adjustment to being far away from home."

A veteran host parent, Carri Peterson says "I cannot recommend this program highly enough. Our international students have expanded our world and enriched our lives. These are some of the best people on the planet. Run, do not walk, to sign up to share your life with a student who is far from home. You will not regret it."

For those interested in more information about this program, you can contact ISP at isp@lindsey.edu. If you would prefer to speak with one of our host parents, to hear about their experience, ISP can put you in touch with some of our veteran host parents who love to share their experience with you and answer any concerns or questions you might have.

From our LWC ISP family to yours, we wish you the merriest Christmas of all!
