Basketball: LWC Women Fall to Bethel in conference opener

By Christopher Webster

Mckenzie, TN - The No. 16-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season falling to Bethel (TN) 76-66 on Thursday evening.

Hailey Ison led the Blue Raiders (3-1, 0-1 MSC) in scoring with a season-high 13 points on the night. Along with her scoring, Ison also collected 5 rebounds. As a team, Lindsey Wilson shot 33.3 percent overall and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Sydnie Hall and Amerah Steele chipped in with the scoring, recording 12 and 10 points, respectively. Bethel's (4-1, 1-0 MSC) Ryann Roberts led the game in scoring with 18 points.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as both teams fought to gain an early advantage. Amelia Hodges got the Blue Raiders started with a three-pointer to take a 3-2 lead with 8:30 left in the first. Both sides continued to trade the lead through the first 10 minutes of the game as Lindsey Wilson exited the first quarter with a 17-15 lead.

The Blue Raiders struggled in the second quarter, only hitting three out of their 14 shot attempts. While Lindsey Wilson struggled from the field, they were making the most of their trips to the free-throw line. The Blue Raiders hit eight out of 10 free throws as they trailed Bethel 37-32 going into halftime.

The Lady Wildcats seemed to have all the momentum in the third quarter, expanding their lead to 12 with 3:57 left in the third quarter. The Blue Raiders were able to weather the storm, as Hall knocked down back-to-back three-pointers along with mid-range jumpers from Lucy Patterson and Maleigha Oldham cut the deficit to five with under a minute left in the third. However, Bethel's Millie Bryant hit a three-pointer in the last few seconds of the third quarter to take a 58-50 lead.

The Blue Raiders fought hard in the fourth quarter as Jordan Stephens hit a shot from beyond the arc and Ison finished a tough layup to open the last 10 minutes of play to cut the lead to three points. However, Bethel was able to pull away late, growing the lead back to as much as 11 as the Blue Raiders lost their first game of the season 76-66.

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team will look to bounce back on Saturday as they travel to face Freed-Hardeman (TN). Tipoff is scheduled for 2pmCT in Henderson, TN.
