Soccer: LWC Men face Grand View in NAIA opening round

By Kyle Jackson

The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team will take on Grand View (IA) in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round on Thursday, November 18, 2021, according to the national qualifiers and opening-round pairings released by the national office on Monday.

The 40-team NAIA Opening Round event will occur on 10 campus locations from November 18-20.

Lindsey Wilson was selected as the No. 2-seed in the Columbia Bracket. Grand View received the No. 3-seed as Columbia (MO) and Point (GA) fill out the top of the bracket as the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds, respectively.

Winners of each contest will advance to the opening round championship game scheduled for Nov. 20. Times for all the contests will be released later this week. All games will be played on the campus of Columbia College on R. Marvin Owens Field.

The 2021 NAIA Opening Round winners will meet up in Decatur, Ala., at the NAIA National Championship final site. The 63rd annual championship takes place at the Jack Allen Soccer Complex on Nov. 30 - Dec. 6.

This year's opening round field includes 27 automatic qualifiers and 13 at-large selections. Automatic berths were given to teams that either won their respective conference tournament title, regular-season championship, or finished runner-up at the conference tournament.

The at-large bids were determined by the NAIA Men's Soccer National Selection Committee. This committee consists of one representative from each geographical area, a representative from the National Administrative Council, the president of the NAIA-Men's Soccer Coaches Association, and four at-large representatives. The committee evaluated teams throughout the year on various criteria.

Lindsey Wilson is making its 28th all-time appearance at the national tournament after receiving an automatic bid. The Blue Raiders have won nine national championships doing so in 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2011 and owns a 57-17-6 record.

Grand View (11-5-2) earned an at-large bid from the Heart of America Conference and are making their 13th appearance in the tournament. Host Columbia (11-2-3) is making its 11th appearance in the tournament with an at-large bid with Point (11-5-2) making their debut in the tournament as the AAC Tournament Champion.

A full preview of the opening round will be available later this week on lwcathletics.com.
