Soccer: LWC Men beat Bethel 1-0

By Christopher Webster

Mckenzie, TN - Nathaniel Onyina Opoku's second-half goal propels the No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team by Bethel (TN) 1-0 on Saturday evening.

The Blue Raiders (9-1-1, 8-0 MSC) push their winning streak to eight while the Wildcats (9-5-1, 4-4 MSC) fall to .500 in conference play.

Each team struggled to put the ball in the back of the net in the first half. The first shot of the game didn't come until the 14th minute as Cyrus Harmon had a step on the Wildcat's defender and left his shot wide left. Bethel's Rodrigo Atilano attempted to give his team the early advantage in the 17th minute, but his shot was blocked to keep the match scoreless.

The Wildcats were presented with a chance to jump out in front in the 25th minute as Nicolas Ruiz served a corner kick. However, he left a little too much on the kick as it sailed out of bounds. A little over a minute later, a shot from Onyina Opoku was blocked by a Bethel defender as both teams continued to search for their first goal of the night.

Perhaps the best opportunity for the Blue Raiders in the first half came in the 29th minute as Alexander Koziolek chipped a shot over the head of Bethel goalkeeper Noberto Lima Vieira but the shot hit the crossbar and was cleared by Bethel's defense.

Bethel attempted to grab a late first-half goal on shots by Pascal Mohungsi and Nicolas Ruiz, but the duo couldn't put their shots on goal as the half ended with both sides tied at zero.

The Blue Raiders came out of the break aggressive as they were awarded four corner kicks over the span of 10 minutes, however, the corners didn't amount to a goal.

The scoring opened in the 62nd minute as Koziolek beat the Wildcat's defense and linked with Onyina Opoku for his 11th goal of the season as Lindsey Wilson took a 1-0 advantage.

Bethel's Antoine Ferez put a shot on frame for the equalizer in the 66th minute but Henrique Cavalini saved the goal as the Blue Raiders kept the lead.

Harmon looked to double the lead in the 71st minute as his header hit the post. A few minutes later Harmon had another opportunity, but his shot was blocked in the 78th minute as the lead remained 1-0 in favor of the Blue Raiders.

Bethel's last chance for a tying goal came in the 81st minute as Justice Nmeregini fired a shot but it was blocked, and Lindsey Wilson came out with a 1-0 win to stay perfect in Mid-South Conference play.

The Blue Raiders return to action on Oct. 19 as they host Tennessee Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pmCT at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
