LWC Softball sweeps No. 5 Marian

By Kyrin Mayfield

The No. 3-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team came away with a home-opening sweep over No. 5 Marian (Ind.) on Wednesday at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (4-0) recorded a total of 13 runs, 20 hits, and three home runs in the doubleheader.

Game one (eight innings): Lindsey Wilson - 3 | Marian - 2
Annabelle Ramirez started in the circle for the Blue Raiders, and she came out firing. The senior fanned two batters and caught a popped bunt in the first inning. One frame later, Ramirez claimed three more victims for five strikeouts in two innings.

Offensively, Lindsey Wilson had no trouble reaching base as the Blue Raiders had a runner on base in each of the first four innings.

Then in the fifth inning, the Blue Raiders finally put a run on the scoreboard with an RBI double from Makea-Al Kaluau to bring home Mikayla Marquez.

That lead did not last long, however. Marian (0-2) tied the score in the sixth when a sharply-hit line drive glanced off a Blue Raider's glove, which allowed the runner at third base to score. With two Knights still on base and only one out, Ramirez retired the following two batters on strikes to escape the jam.

Wanting the lead back, Lindsey Wilson struck again in the sixth when Lyric Houston hustled home and ran over Marian's catcher for the go-ahead run.

With only three outs left to tie the game, the Knight's scraped across a run in the seventh, which eventually sent the game into extra innings.

After an empty top of the eighth, Alexis Garayzar started the bottom half of the inning with a single. Houston followed suit to put two runners on with one out, and a walk issued to Brianna Griffiths loaded the bases. With a chance to win the game, Marquez sent a ball deep to center that sneaked over the glove of Marian's center fielder and bounced off the wall, allowing pinch-runner Payton Griffith to score as the winning run for the Blue Raiders.

Ramirez received her second win of the season for Lindsey Wilson. She tossed eight innings and allowed one earned run, six hits, four walks, and struck out 16 batters, a total that matched her career-high. Ramirez also threw 147 pitches, the most she has ever thrown in a single game.

Marquez had a great game from inside the batter's box as the junior went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Game two: Lindsey Wilson - 10 | Marian - 6
Marian flexed the bats early on in the second game with a two-run home run in the first and a solo shot in the second, which chased the Blue Raider's starting pitcher Hannah Epperson from the match.

However, all it took was one swing of the bat to tie the game. With two runners on in the second inning, Houston continued her hot start to the season with a three-run home run, her second round-tripper of the year in just four games as Lindsey Wilson tied it at three.

After a scoreless third, the Blue Raiders found consistent contact in the fourth. Five hits and two walks led to four runs for Lindsey Wilson and a 7-3 advantage.

The Blue Raiders showed some power an inning later in the fifth. Both Garayzar and Houston lifted balls over the outfield fence. The two home runs put Lindsey Wilson up 9-3.

Marian fought back in the sixth with a pair of runs, but Lindsey Wilson tacked on one more in the bottom half when Garayzar found open space in the field to being home Kaluau.

In the seventh, the Knights threatened once again. After adding a run, Marian had two runners on with two outs, but the Blue Raiders managed to end the threat and come away with the win.

Breanna Clark was credited with her first win of the young season. She relieved Epperson in the second inning and pitched 5.1 frames, allowed three earned runs, and struck out a career-high five batters.

Garayzar was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with three runs and two RBIs. Houston also had a strong game going 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs.

Lindsey Wilson has a five-day break before kicking off Mid-South Conference play against Shawnee State (Ohio) with a home doubleheader next Tuesday and Wednesday, March 2 and 3.
