ACSO: Firearms will be turned over to KSP

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

The Adair County Sheriff's Office is preparing to transport firearm--seized during arrests made by the Sheriff's Office for criminal offenses--to the Kentucky State Police in Frankfort, where they will be sold or destroyed.

These guns were seized because they were involved in drug-related offenses, were used in commission of a crime, or were found to be unlawfully in the possession of a convicted felon.

The cases involving the firearms have already been adjudicated in Adair Circuit and Districts Courts. Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright and County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison Corbin petitioned the courts in each of the cases for the guns to be forfeited in accordance with KRS 16.220 and 500.080. Orders granting those motions were signed by Judge Judy Vance Murphy and Judge Michael Loy.

By Kentucky statute, these guns will be turned over to the Kentucky State Police where they will be auctioned at a public sale, or destroyed if they are deemed unsafe.

Those funds will then be used to assist law enforcement agencies across the commonwealth with the purchase of Kevlar bulletproof vests.

We are pleased to be able to remove these firearms from the ones in our community who chose to irresponsibly possess or use them.
