Gaynor's put-back sends LWC Men's Basketball to 81-78 win

By Chris Wells

Colen Gaynor's put-back three-point play with 0.6 seconds left in regulation proved to be the difference as the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team beat visiting Dalton State (GA) 81-78 today at Biggers Sports Center.

Gaynor narrowly missed a double-double with a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds in the win.

The put-back erased the Roadrunners' comeback attempt and sent the Blue Raiders (3-2) to their second straight win. Dalton State (0-1) overcame a four-point deficit in the final minute with back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 78-78 with 23 seconds.

Gaynor -- holding for the final shot of regulation -- drove to the basket and kicked the ball out to Payton Cundiff on the baseline with four seconds remaining on the clock. Cundiff's shot was just short but Gaynor cleaned up the miss and was fouled to give the Blue Raiders the lead for good.

Following Gaynor's made free throw, the Roadrunners threw the length of the court but their shot -- which missed -- came after the buzzer.

Lindsey Wilson never trailed in the second half and built as much as an 11-point lead (67-56) midway through the half. The Roadrunners methodically climbed back into the game cutting the deficit to a one-possession game on four different occasions before tying the game in the waning seconds.

Lindsey Wilson ended the game shooting a season-high 54.5 percent (36-of-66) from the floor, including over 72-percent (31-of-43) on shots inside the 3-point arc. The Blue Raiders also took advantage of 15 Dalton State turnovers, scoring 13 points off the Roadrunners' miscues.

Dalton State joined the Blue Raiders with a good night shooting in its season debut. The Roadrunners finished the game shooting 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field.

Cundiff (15 points) and Elijah Jordan (16) joined Gaynor in double-figures. Rodley Adjei led Dalton State with 28 points.

The Blue Raiders and Roadrunners exchanged the lead four times during the first 20 minutes in a closely fought first half. Cundiff led Lindsey Wilson with 10 first-half points, including making a pair of 3-pointers in the frame.

Lindsey Wilson seized its largest lead of the half with just under six minutes left in the half on a Jordan jumper from the corner to give the Blue Raiders a 29-22 lead. The Blue Raiders -- who did not trail over the final 11:38 of the half -- took a 37-32 lead into the locker room.

Lindsey Wilson is scheduled to host Thomas More (KY) at 8pmCT on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, as the Blue Raiders return to Mid-South Conference play at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.
