LWC Women's Basketball secures 58-56 Upset victory By Brady Budke Crestview Hills, KY - A game that came down to the final seconds of action proved to favor the (RV) Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team on Friday evening at the Julie Costello Memorial Classic, as the team upset No. 3-ranked Marian (IN) by a final of 58-56. The Blue Raiders now move to 5-1 overall on the season, while the Knights drop to 6-3. The finish of play had fans and players of both squads on the edge of their seats. The competition was a back-and-forth battle early, as a 16-16 stalemate was what the scoreboard read after one quarter. LWC held onto a slim 31-29 lead going into the halftime locker room, but was eventually able to control a 49-39 upper hand heading into the fourth. Despite trailing by as much as 12 in the final quarter, Marian made a final push to try and avoid the upset loss. With under 10 seconds remaining in the contest, Maleigha Oldham connected on two clutch free throws to give LWC a 58-53 cushion. However, Ella Collier of the Knights earned a four-point play out of a timeout on the other end, where she would step up to the line with little time remaining and her team down two. On an intentional missed free throw attempt, it was Tamia Perryman of MU who corralled the crucial offensive board over top the outreaching hands of the Lindsey Wilson players. Despite the last second heroics, Perryman was not able to connect on a quick jump shot attempt to tie the game, propelling the Blue Raiders to the win. Lindsey Wilson was led in scoring by Reagan Turner, who tallied 17 points alongside four rebounds and two assists. Hailey Ison also notched double-figures scoring with 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Bree Glover controlled the glass once again with 11 boards while dishing out three assists and earning three steals in a six-point outing. For Marian, Collier led the scoring at 19 points, while Abby Downard and Kinnidy Garrard earned 12 and 11 points respectively in the loss. The Blue Raiders shot 37 percent from the field for the game (20-of-54), while the Knights managed just a 30.6 percent mark (19-of-62). LWC out-rebounded MU 43-to-36, but committed four more turnovers than the Knights along with having nine shots blocked in the game. The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team returns to the court tomorrow at noon CT to face off against Saint Francis (IN) to conclude the Julie Costello Memorial Classic.
