COVID-19: how long are we contagious

COVID-19: The Lake Cumberland District Health Department representatives regularly answer questions from the communities in Adair * Casey * Clinton * Cumberland * Green * McCreary * Pulaski * Russell * Taylor and * Wayne Counties in regular Zoom meetings. One Q&A follows:

Q: ...On determining isolation based on symptom onset - I have read research that indicates a person is more likely to be contagious early on (even prior to showing symptoms, one reason to wear masks), but everything I have read suggests that a person may no longer be contagious 10 days after symptoms are resolved...

A: It has been ascertained from several studies that most people with mild to moderate disease are no longer contagious after the 10th day from symptom onset, providing they have not had a fever for 24 hours and their symptoms are improving. Severe disease may prolong viral shedding and hence the CDC recommends a 20 day isolation period - and of course the person has to be improving.
