Slow second half sinks LWC against Philander Smith

By Brady Budke

Pulaski, TN - The second half was not friendly to the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team in its season opener on Friday night, leading to the team falling 71-61 to Philander Smith (AR) on the opening night of the RedHawk Classic.

The Blue Raiders corralled the first half advantage against the Panthers, leading 43-32 heading into the halftime locker room on 47.2 percent shooting from the field (17-of-36). However, LWC had its foot taken off the gas pedal midway through the second half as Philander Smith notched a staggering 23-3 run to turn the tables completely. Despite the momentum shifting, Lindsey Wilson was successfully able to cut its newfound deficit down to just one point with under five minutes remaining. But it was Philander Smith who stepped back up and executed a successful 12-3 run to end the game with the win.

The Blue Raiders shot 34.4 percent from the field for the game (22-of-64), making only five field goals the whole second half. The Panthers shot a higher 40.3 percent for the game (25-of-62). LWC won the rebounding battle 48-to-40, but committed 18 turnovers compared to PSC's 11.

Scoring for the Blue Raiders was done in heavy bulk by the trio of Giir Ring, Payton Cundiff, and Colen Gaynor, all of which were the only to score in double-figures. Ring led the way with 18 points on a strong 8-of-9 performance from the field while also securing a double-double with 11 rebounds. Cundiff produced 15 points while drilling home a team-high five 3-pointers. Gaynor also earned himself a double-double, notching 10 points and 13 boards.

For Philander Smith, Evan Council erupted for 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to lead the way. Dejalin Austin was the only other Panther in double-figures on the night with 12 points.

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team returns to the court tomorrow afternoon to face off against Williams Baptist (AR) at 2 p.m. CT. Live video and live stats will be available for the game. Martin Methodist (TN), who is hosting the RedHawk Classic, is currently not allowing fans of visiting teams on campus at this time.
