Greetings from Africa

Jeff Giles submitted the following letter:

I am fast approaching my second month of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Eritrea/Ethiopia. I must say that this has been quite an experience for me. It has been both rewarding and very challenging.

Although one might think otherwise, even though this is a UN mission, we live as the natives here live. I must say that is has been a big adjustment for me. It takes some time to get used to the food and sleeping accomodations. I know that I have not experienced nearly the harsh conditions that many veterans from Columbia have experienced. We are a multi-national force here, so I have worked along side soldiers from all over the world. I have worked with soldiers from China, Russia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, India, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, South Africa, Spain, Finland, Switzerland, Norway and many others. It has been very rewarding to meet soldiers of so many different nationalities. I have enjoyed their company and their friendship.

I very much miss Columbia and the hospitality of my fellow citizens. I have been blessed to have spent most of my life there. The packages I have received have been appreciated more than you will ever know. I look forward to the day when I return and seeing all of my friends and family again.
--LCDR Jeff Giles, USNR
