Markings uncovered, SS New Amsterdam plates

By Donna Rieder

This is the story of a deck chair I picked it up at a yard sale about 30 years ago for $5.

Last year I pressure washed it, and after knocking the moss and lichens off, I discovered these brass plates.

One says "1st Class Only" on the front of the chair, and on the back of the headrest one reads "SS New Amsterdam. "

I researched it and found out that the SS New Amsterdam was a luxury cruiseliner in use from 1890-1940, when it was then used as a military transport.

The chair is teak wood, and surprisingly comfortable. The footrest is movable.

Pretty amazing that I have hauled this chair with me all these years, and never realized what a wonderful piece of history it had!
