Grandpa - My Hero! A Father's Day gift I'm going to tell you about someone who has been a great role model and the best Grandpa I could ever ask for, my Pa, John. My Pa is a hard-working and enthusiastic man. Even though he's 77 years old, he can still outwork my 21-year-old brother on the farm. He is always open to helping others and showing kindness to everyone he meets. His hobbies include: farming, spending time with his family, and having coffee with his friends at McDonald's. He is also the biggest family man I know. He is never hesitant to spend time with his family or friends. He loves his family, friends, and his community. In addition, he was the sheriff of Adair County for 12 years. During those 12 years, he tried his best to uphold the law and keep drugs out of our county. My Pa served his country in the Army from 1963 to 1965. He was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam war. I'm proud of him for serving his community and country. I like to be around my Pa for lots of different reasons. He is the funniest person I know. He is always ready to make someone laugh with one of his jokes or funny stories. I also like to be around my Pa because he makes me feel special. He has eight grandkids, but I still feel like I'm unique to him. Pa always is ready to lend a hand to my family. Anytime we need help with a tractor, backhoe, or just any kind of work, he is always there. In closing, I know that my Pa should be Grandparent of the Year because he is one of the best role models and one of the kindest people I know. My hero! It would be hard for me to describe how I feel about him. All I know is that I love him and I know that he loves me. - Lilly Myers, ACES Lilly's winning essay was announced in May after this year's Adair County AARP Grandparent essay contest, held by the Retired Teacher's Association. She is the daughter of Chad and Jenny Myers. Her winning entry was about her maternal grandfather, John Ballou. This story was posted on 2020-06-20 22:37:17
