Lilly Myers writes award winning essay

By Ellen Zornes

The Adair County Retired Teachers' Association is pleased to announce the results of the AARP Grandparent essay contest. The essay is an annual state wide writing contest for fifth grade students about why my grandparent should be the grandparent of the year.

We are proud to announce that Lilly Myers, fifth grade student at Adair County Elementary School and student of teacher, Vickie Houk, was selected as the winner of this year's Adair County AARP Grandparent essay contest. She is the daughter of Chad and Jenny Myers. Her winning entry was about her maternal grandfather, John Ballou. One very touching part in her essay is, "...he always makes me feel special. He has eight grandkids but I still feel I'm unique to him."

For her winning essay, Lilly received a Certificate from AARP and $25 from the Adair County Retired Teachers' Association. Her school also received a certificate on her behalf.

As usual we had many well written essays. In second place was Addie Baker, daughter of Tim and Dawn Baker, third place Emily Hart, daughter of Laura Hart and Receiving Honorable Mention are Febe LeeAnn Conner, Sophie Eaton, Jolene Nuszbaum and Sophey Smith.

We also thank retired teacher, Teresa Roy, for heading up the grandparent essay contest again this year, the fifth grade Language Arts teachers and all students who participated. Great job!
