COVID-19 Update: citizens advised to self protect

As state begins to reopen, victims of virus are expected to grow - advice is to avoid being lulled into a false sense of security; remain vigilant and use good judgment.

By Amy Tomlinson - Lake Cumberland District Health Department

In the ten-county LCDHD area as the week comes to a close Friday, May 15, 2020, there are no new deaths to report.

We announced one new case Thursday, an 88-year-old female nursing home resident from Adair County; and six new cases today - two in Pulaski and four in Russell. Today's cases include a 66-year-old male from Pulaski; a 61-year-old male from Pulaski; a 76-year-old male in Russell; a 40-year-old male from Russell; a 33-year-old male from Russell; and, a 62-year-old female from Russell. We have 160 people or 79% of our total cumulative positive cases that have recovered.

Right now, in Kentucky, the seven-day average growth rate (how long it takes the total cumulative positive cases to double) is 35 days.

Just a few weeks ago, it was doubling at just over every three days.

As businesses reopen and people start to get out and mingle more with others, we expect to see that doubling pace to quicken. Therefore, we encourage all citizens to take proactive and assertive actions to protect themselves and their families.

Remember, avoiding crowds, wearing a mask, covering your cough, washing your hands thoroughly and often with soap and water, and staying home if you are sick are still the best preventive measures.

Do not be lulled into a false sense of security. Remain vigilant and use good judgment.

Regardless of the confirmed case count for any Lake Cumberland County, we believe COVID-19 to be widespread. LCDHD is working to identify and contact all those with whom any positive case may have come into close contact.

We have received a shipment of facemasks and face shields that, via state guidance, we are pushing out to various restaurant and grocer related businesses.

We continue to review the Governor's business reopening guidance and to field questions from local businesses regarding such.
