2019-20 Highlights: Coetzee has record-setting season By Christopher Coombs Calvin Coetzee of the Lindsey Wilson men's swim team had a record-setting season in the pool for the Blue Raiders consisting of multiple program and conference records as well as an individual national championship. Coetzee became men's swimming first-ever NAIA National Champion after stealing the show in the 200-yard freestyle. The native of Durban, South Africa carried the fastest time into the finals at 1:38.86. He shaved nearly two seconds off his time in the finals to take first place with a time of 1:37.00. He also earned three individual as well as five relay NAIA All-American honors for his performances at the championship. Coetzee also saw individual success at the MSC Championship where he notched four MSC meet records over three days. The freshman broke records in the 500-yard (4:27.47), 200-yard (1:26.59), 100-yard (45.19) freestyle and 100-yard butterfly (49.88). Coetzee compiled 12 A cuts - achieving the mark in all of his races -- during the conference championship. He claimed first place three times as an individual as well as three times during relay events. Coetzee earned six First Team All-MSC honors as well as one-second team honor. For his performance, he was named the NAIA National Swimmer of the Month for the second consecutive time. He is just the second Blue Raider in program history to pick up the national honor.
