Family hoping to gather in Perryville in late July, 2020

Thinking of summer family gathering - maybe by the end of July the annual reunion could still be possible.

By Mike Crain

The Annual Cocanougher-Connour Reunion is planned for Sunday, July 26, 2020 at The American Legion Hall at Perryville KY, 10amCT-3pm/11amET-4pm. A Potluck lunch will be about 12:45pm. In 2019, 72 of our family from six states attended. We hope many of those and others will attend this 2020 Reunion.

Do call before you travel a long distance since this Coronavirus could change plans.

You may contact Mike Crain phone 859-368-3853 or email Postcardlex@aol.com. We will have, as always fun, food, fellowship, genealogy displays, stories, laughs and our game "Who Has?" You may bring items to donate to this game from where you have been quarintined and cleaning your house during these weeks. Hope this house cleaning has worked better for you than it has for me. lol

The photo with this article was made by Bruce Cocanougher after the first mowing in March 2020 of The Cocanougher Cemetery on Long Run Road near Texas community in Washington County Kentucky. Bruce continues to work on eliminating wild violets that have a 200 year jump on him in killing out grass. Bruce says about 80% are eliminated. We appreciate the work Bruce and his family have done for years in maintaining our ancestral burial grounds that dates back to 1822.

Listed here are known to be 20 buried in The Cocanougher Cemetery. There could be more.

Eleanor "Neley" Silvertooth Cocanougher 1744-1822 Wife of Jacob Cocanougher 1745-1831 (he may have served as a wagoneer in The American Revolution & has a SAR monument in this Cemetery). Both are buried here and were the first two as far as we know.~~ Their son George Cocanougher (1793- Aug. 20, 1845) and his wife Martha Hilton Cocanougher (1800- Dec 21, 1859). Their children William Cocanougher (Feb 7, 1826-June 9, 1902) and his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Young Cocanougher (June 22,1830-Feb 10, 1918). William's brother George Washington "Big George" Cocaougher (1829-1899) and his wife Nancy Elliott Burns Cocanougher (May 10, 1833 - Oct 22, 1914). Mattie Cocanougher (June 20, 1861- Dec 6, 1878) Daughter of "Big George" & Nancy Cocanougher. She is believed to be the Cocanougher ghost.

Other family members without the Cocanougher name buried in The Cocanougher Cemetery on Long Run include Anderson Burns (June 26,1911-Feb 21,1914); his father Jake Burns (Feb 12,1888-Apr 26, 1919). Jake was the husband of Dora Milburn Burns. James Morris Burns(June 27,1853- May 22, 1891). Nancy E. Burns(Apr 21, 1859- Aug 6, 1913). Sofia Burns (July 5,1916- Sept 16, 1916). Myrtle Elliott (Apr 18, 1879- Sept. 8, 1905). Frances Lawrence (May 30, 1819 - Apr. 16, 1889). Visa Lawrence (Dec 25, 1860- June 17, 1882). America Key (1840-1900). George Key - Co.B. 4th KY Inf.
