LWC Baseball falls to IU Southeast 11-7

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team lost to No. 12-ranked IU Southeast 11-7 on Wednesday evening.

The Blue Raiders (10-12, 2-1 MSC) were active from the plate, notching 12 hits in the loss. Kelvin Llanos led the way offensively for Lindsey Wilson with three hits and two RBI's. Derek Zavala, Fernando Rosales, and Gabe Board each crossed the plate twice for the Blue Raiders.

Zavala led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and then advanced to third off a Llanos double to right-center field. With one out, Tyler Maskill grounded out to third base but Zavala scored on the play. It was all the Blue Raiders could manage in the inning as they took the early 1-0 lead.

IU Southeast (18-1, 6-0 RSC) loaded the bases in the second inning across the first three batters. With no outs, a sac fly scored the Grenadiers only run as LWC managed to get the inning's final two outs across the next two batters.

Rosales opened the bottom half of the inning reaching base after he was hit by a pitch. He then advanced to second on a stolen base before a Vincent Boils groundout pushed him to third. With two outs in the inning, Zavala doubled down the left-field line to score Rosales. Zavala then stole a bag of his own before a Seth Price single pushed the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-1.

The Grenadiers leveled the score at three with a two-run home run by Derek Wagner in the top of the third. IUSE tacked on another run in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead on two hits in the inning.

Lindsey Wilson leveled the score at four in the bottom half of the inning. Boils led off with a single as his pinch-runner Board would make his way to third base after a Cody Fallon groundout and a Llanos fly out. A wild pitch afforded Lindsey Wilson one run as Board would score.

IU Southeast exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to take control of the game for good. The Grenadiers produced their five runs on four hits.

The Blue Raiders showed signs of life in the eighth inning after three scoreless at the plate. Austin Rayno singled and later scored on a Rosales single with one out in the inning. With the bases loaded, Zavala reached base on a Grenadiers error that scored Rosales. A Llanos single brought in the Blue Raiders final run when pinch-runner Board was able to score, trimming the IUSE lead to two at 9-7.

IU Southeast added two insurance runs in the ninth inning as they were able to take the contest by a final of 11-7.

Conner Burnett (2-0) picked up the win from the mound while Ryan Marples (0-1) recorded the loss.

Lindsey Wilson stays home for its next contest as they take on Shawnee State at 1pmCT on Friday for a doubleheader. The Blue Raiders and the Bears conclude their weekend Mid-South Conference series on Saturday with a single game at 10 a.m. CT.
