LWC Baseball sweeps Pikeville on Saturday

By Brady Budke

Pikeville, KY - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team added its first two Mid-South Conference wins of the season on Saturday, sweeping Pikeville (KY) on the road in Saturday's action to leave winners of two out of three.

The Blue Raiders batting continues to tell an impressive story, as the team tallied 19 total hits against the Bears between both games.

Game One: Lindsey Wilson 6 | Pikeville 4
UPIKE claimed the lone game on Friday, and quickly jumped out ahead on Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader. An RBI double in the bottom half of the third crossed a Pikeville run for the 1-0 lead.

The Pikeville lead was quickly evaporated when Seth Price hit an RBI double to left-center field in the fourth inning to knot things. Price would advance his way to third on a Tyler Maskill single to left field which eventually transitioned into a run on a Dillan Saunders RBI groundout for the 2-1 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson clocked in another run in the fifth inning when Derek Zavala tallied an RBI single to center field. The lead stood at 3-1 favoring LWC.

UPIKE stayed within arm's reach in the game when it crossed a lone run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to left field, trimming the Lindsey Wilson lead to just one.

With the game in the finishing stages, Pikeville received the gift it had been looking for. With a runner on second base, Eduardo Bello launched a two-run home run over the right field wall to give the Bears a 4-3 lead with just one inning left.

Despite losing the lead and being down to its last three outs, Lindsey Wilson turned up the heat from the plate in the final inning of action. Jed Arend tied the game back up when he sent across an LWC run on an RBI double to left field. The very next plate appearance, it took Zavala only two pitches to grab the Blue Raiders the lead right back on a single to shallow left field that crossed Vincent Boils. The next at-bat saw a wild pitch cross Arend from third base which secured the 6-4 victory.

Bradley Hines started the game from the bump for Lindsey Wilson, going five complete innings while striking out three and walking three on one earned run. Cade Duncan came in for relief, going 2-1/3 innings allowing three earned runs while walking two and striking out two. Andy Rosales was tabbed the winning pitcher, going 1-2/3 innings while striking out a lone batter. Jorden Davy picked up the loss for UPIKE.

From the plate, the quartet of Zavala, Price, Boils, and Arend each recorded a team-high two hits. Zavala notched two RBI's in the winning effort, while Price, Saunders, and Arend added one apiece to their season total.

Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 8 | Pikeville 1 (*Seven Innings)
The second game on the menu was all Lindsey Wilson from the jump. The Blue Raiders sprinted out to an early 8-0 lead after four innings before Pikeville could add its lone run in the sixth.

Chance Stayton opened the scoring in the game when he doubled to left-center field scoring Austin Rayno from second base. Stayton stole his way to third base in the next plate appearance which saw Cody Fallon single to left field to score Stayton for a quick 2-0 lead.

The runs continued to cross in the third inning for the road team, beginning with a Maskill sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to three. A short time later, Saunders would cross for another run on a dropped popup by the Pikeville catcher. The hurt continued for the Bears in the inning when a wild throw by the third baseman strolled home Arend and Rayno, increasing the LWC lead to 6-0.

The next inning of action from the plate saw Gabe Board belt an RBI double to left field which scored another Lindsey Wilson run. The final Blue Raider run of the contest came when Maskill successfully hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, scoring Board from third. Before the Bears could blink, the deficit had increased to 8-0.

UPIKE would cross a lone run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, but it was all the Bears bats could muster up in the losing performance.

Ethan Escue was the winning pitcher, going five complete innings while striking out three and walking five on one earned run. Brandon Wilson finished things off, going two complete innings and striking out two. Davy was once again tabbed the losing pitcher for the Bears.

Stayton corralled three RBI's in the contest for Lindsey Wilson, while Maskill added two of his own on two sacrifice flies. Board, Rayno, and Fallon each pulled home one RBI in the victory.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on March 10th to face Midway (Ky.) in a doubleheader at Egnew Park beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
