CPD: Man arrested for impersonating Sheriff

By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO
Columbia Police Department

A Columbia man was arrested on Friday night after calling the Adair County 911 Center and identifying himself as Sheriff.

Travis Burton, 55, of Columbia called 911 at approximately 8:37pmCT on Friday, March 6, 2020, identifying himself twice as "Sheriff Travis Burton." He went on to say he was pinned in by a vehicle on East Guardian Street and requested Officers respond.

Upon arrival, Columbia Police Department officers made contact with Burton at a residence on East Guardian, where the resident stated to Officers that a male subject had taken his cruiser. At the scene, Burton repeatedly stated to Columbia Police Department officers that he was Sheriff of Adair County, and they were free to confirm with the Adair County Judge Executive who had appointed him.

Burton was placed into custody on scene and has been charged with filing a false report as well as impersonating a peace officer; a class D felony.

Officer John Dial was the arresting Officer. Officer Drew Conn as well as a member of Adair Sheriff's Office, Deputy Josh Durbin, also responded.
