LWC Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with the Ozarks

By Brady Budke

Career-high pitching efforts and efficient hitting carried the Lindsey Wilson baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over the College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon at Egnew Park.

The Blue Raiders bats combined to push out 15 hits between both contests, while the starting duo of Chandler Harnage and Bradley Hines punched out a combined 17 batters in both winning efforts.

Game one: Lindsey Wilson 9 | Ozarks 0

The first game of the day was a strong combination of Harnage dealing one of his top career games from the bump and Lindsey Wilson striking the ball with high efficiency from the plate.

Little action amassed the opening stanza of the game with it rolling as a scoreless stalemate until the fifth inning. Jed Arend broke the tie with an RBI single to right field scoring Fernando Rosales from third base.

A busy sixth inning saw Lindsey Wilson cross four runners to create comfortable breathing room over the Bobcats. Austin Rayno scored the first run of the inning and the second of the contest on an Ozarks dropped fly ball. A few at-bats later, Kelvin Llanos cranked an RBI double to deep right-center field to score one run, pushing the lead to 3-0. Tyler Maskill escalated the scoring on a successful sacrifice fly that crossed Rosales from third base for the second time in the game. The scoring in the inning concluded with Llanos crossing home plate on wild throw by the Ozarks, making it 5-0 in favor of the home team.

The scoring picked back up in the eighth inning with another strong Lindsey Wilson inning from the plate. Arend began the scoring with his second RBI of the contest, scoring Llanos from third base on a successful sacrifice fly to right field. Derek Zavala joined the RBI column for the game when he launched a ball to deep center field and reached second base scoring home another LWC run. Rayno sealed the 9-0 victory when he brought home two more runners on his RBI double to right field.

Harnage pitched his career-high going the full nine innings, giving up seven hits and no earned runs while walking just one batter. Harnage also notched his career-high striking out eight batters. Sean Neal was tabbed the losing pitcher for the Bobcats.

Rayno knocked out three hits and two RBI's to lead LWC from the plate. The quartet of Maskill, Arend, Zavala, and Llanos each recorded two hits and at least one RBI in the winning effort.

Game two: Lindsey Wilson 3 | Ozarks 2 (*Seven innings)

Looking to complete the Saturday sweep at home, head coach Cody Andreychuk sent out Hines to start game two and direct play from the mound for the Blue Raiders.

The Ozarks unlatched the scoring in the second inning, crossing a lone run on a Lindsey Wilson dropped pop fly and another solo run on an RBI single to take an early 2-0 advantage.

The Blue Raiders answered the call right back in the bottom half of the inning, pushing home Seth Price on a wild throw from the Bobcats pitcher to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

The bottom half of the third inning was all Lindsey Wilson needed to finish off a scrappy Ozarks effort. The game became all knotted up at two when Arend grounded out to the second baseman allowing Llanos to score from third. Zavala dissolved the tie and sent Maskill home as the winning run with an RBI single in the gap between third base and shortstop. The game finished off with 3-1/2 scoreless innings, favoring Lindsey Wilson.

Hines rolled out as the winning pitcher, allowing four hits, walking two batters, and striking out a career-high nine. Hines lasted his career-high of 6-2/3 innings from the mound in his first recorded win of the year. Cade Duncan came in and notched his third save for LWC. Kyle Giefer fell as the losing pitcher for the Ozarks.

From the plate, Arend and Zavala each notched an RBI in the contest, while Zavala, Rayno, and Gabe Board tallied the only three hits for Lindsey Wilson.

Lindsey Wilson returns to Egnew Park tomorrow at Noon CT to finish off play with the Bobcats in a single game. Live video and live stats will be available for the contest.
