LWC Softball splits doubleheader with Huntington

By Brady Budke

On the chilly Friday afternoon at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, the Huntington Foresters battled back from a nine-run blowout loss in game one to an upset 1-0 victory over the No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. Game one was a high-scoring affair, with 15 total runs crossing the plate between the teams. The second game of the series was a complete opposite, with just one lone run crossing in a defensive clash.

The split moves the Blue Raiders to 9-1 on the year, while the Foresters improve to 1-1.

Game One: Lindsey Wilson 12 | Huntington 3 (Six innings)
The Foresters grabbed the lead early in the contest on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Despite the deficit, the Blue Raiders attacked right back from the plate in the bottom half of the inning with a hoard of runs.

Breanna Clark began the scoring with an RBI single to tie things up at one. A little later in the inning, Faith Harris would strike a ball deep to left-center field and send two runs to the plate on an RBI double, making the score 3-1. The scoring continued in the inning with Sam Sims bringing home the runner on third base on a well-executed bunt to make the score 4-1. Desiree Chang singled to shallow right field in her first at-bat of the contest sending home two more Lindsey Wilson runs to make things 6-1 after an eventful first inning.

A stalemate consumed the flow of play until the fourth inning, where Huntington crossed two runs on a fielder's choice and an RBI single to cut the score in half at 6-3.

Despite the mid-game heroics from the road team, it was Lindsey Wilson who buried the hatchet in the final two innings of action.

The bottom half of the fifth inning was another offensive showing for the Blue Raiders. The scoring began with Jordyn Sanders crossing on a wild pitch. A few at-bats later, Harris walked up to the plate and launched out a three-run home run over the center field wall to increase the home team cushion to 10-3.

Jaydee Boursaw ended the game in walk-off fashion for Lindsey Wilson, sending out a two-run shot over the left field wall.

Clark picked up the win from the center circle for the Blue Raiders, pitching five complete innings while striking out four. Hannah Epperson closed things out from the circle, pitching one complete inning while striking out two. Mallory West fell as the losing pitcher from Huntington.

From the plate, Harris corralled up a five RBI game on two hits for Lindsey Wilson. The trio of Chang, Sims, and Abby Whelan also tallied two hits in the contest. Clark recorded one hit and one RBI from the plate alongside her pitching victory.

Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 0 | Huntington 1
With the sun beginning to set at the ballpark, Huntington jumped out early once again rolling home an early run off an RBI single in the first inning to gain a 1-0 advantage.

The game progressed on as a defensive juggernaut between both squads as six straight scoreless innings consumed the scoreboard, favoring the Foresters by a single run for the victory. Within that span of play, Lindsey Wilson moved within striking distance in the sixth inning but stranded runners on second and third base.

Despite falling in the contest, Lindsey Wilson matched Huntington with five hits from the plate. Nine stranded runners proved to plague the Blue Raiders chances throughout the contest.

Taylor Slade drops the game from the circle, going seven complete innings and striking out five batters on the lone earned run. Meghan Fretz rolled out as the winning pitcher, going seven complete innings while striking out six LWC batters.

Lindsey Wilson returns to Marilyn D. Sparks Park tomorrow at approximately 2pmCT to face Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind). The game will follow the noon CT game between Huntington and Saint Mary-of-the Woods.
