Whelan tosses perfect game as LWC sweeps Indiana Tech

By Brady Budke

Abby Whelan from the circle and the Lindsey Wilson offensive attack headlined play at Marilyn D. Sparks Park on Thursday evening in a doubleheader sweep over Indiana Tech. LWC controlled both games, winning game one 17-6 and game two 11-0. Both games ended in a five-inning run-rule.

Whelan threw a perfect game in the Blue Raiders game two victory over the Warriors. Whelan went five innings, struck out four batters, and failed to allow a single base runner in a career game for the senior from Flaherty, Kentucky.

From the plate, Lindsey Wilson recorded 14 total hits in game one and eight in game two. The Blue Raiders power-hitting also came alive in both games, launching out five home runs in game one and two in the second game.

Game 1: Lindsey Wilson 17 | Indiana Tech 6 *(5 innings)
Lindsey Wilson made use of two huge offensive innings in the win as they scored eight in the third followed by nine in the fourth. Lyric Houston recorded two home runs to lead the Blue Raiders offensively.

Indiana Tech got off to a quick start as they scored one run in the first and four in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Warriors made use of five hits and two home runs across the two innings but would fail to score any more runs in the contest.

Lindsey Wilson, after struggling at the plate early in the contest, exploded for eight runs as 13 LWC batters went to the plate in the third inning. After a leadoff out, Makea-Al Kaluau and Whelan both reached base after being hit by pitches. Breanna Clark doubled to deep right-center field to score the first Blue Raider run of the contest.

Jaydee Boursaw and Houston provided back-to-back home runs to tie the game at five. Boursaw smashed a three-run shot to left as Houston followed suit with a solo home run.

With two outs, Zakiya Sizemore later scored on a Desiree Chang single to give LWC a 6-5 lead. With runners on first and second a Kaluau single scored two as LWC took an 8-5 lead into the fourth inning.

Facing two outs in the fourth inning, Lexi Isable came to the plate with the bases loaded and poked a grand slam to straightaway center field to push the LWC advantage to 12-5. Kaluau managed a home run of her own during the next at-bat, pushing the Lindsey Wilson lead to eight runs.

With runners on first and second a two-RBI double by Boursaw increased the Lindsey Wilson lead even further. Houston provided her second home run of the day, this one a two-run shot to give the Blue Raiders a commanding 17-5 lead.

Indiana Tech scored one run in the fifth inning but with three outs Lindsey Wilson won the contest via run rule.

Taylor Slade picked up the win for LWC in the circle as Hannah Middlebrooks received the loss for Indiana Tech.

Game 2: Lindsey Wilson | Indiana Tech 11-0 *(5 innings)
Along with runs continuing to cross the plate in a heavy bulk, the highlight of game two was Whelan dealing a perfect game from the circle for Lindsey Wilson in the controlled victory. Whelan picks up her second win of the season. From the plate, Whelan continued her career evening going 2-for-3 with two RBI's.

The scoring in game two began with the Blue Raiders striking early in the first inning, as Clark knocked home two runs on an RBI single. The first inning scoring continued with Houston sending home another run for LWC on an RBI fielder's choice, making the score 3-0.

Lindsey Wilson continued to keep its foot on the pedal as the third inning saw Faith Harris launch out a three-run home run to increase the Blue Raiders lead to 6-0.

The fourth inning began with Whelan driving home two runs on an RBI single to push the LWC lead to a comfortable 8-0 margin. The Blue Raiders sent more runs across the plate in the inning when Boursaw sent out a three-run home run to push the score to 11-0 in the eventual five-inning victory.

The Lindsey Wilson softball team returns to Marilyn D. Sparks Park tomorrow at 3pmCT for a doubleheader against Huntington (Ind.). Live video and live stats will be available for both games.
