LWC Men's Basketball falls short against No. 18 Thomas More

By Brady Budke

Reece Brooks, Matthew Eldridge, and Kel Stotts were the only Blue Raiders able to manage double-figures scoring the ball as the men's basketball team dropped a Mid-South Conference game against No. 18 Thomas More (Ky.) today on senior day by a final of 73-60.

Today's senior day recognized Brooks, Eldridge, Kameron Mack, Malik Hart, and student assistants Tim Hollins & Ethan Hennis for their hard work & dedication to the LWC MBB program.

Stotts came off the bench and produced one of the top scoring efforts for LWC, notching 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Brooks stood right with Stotts in his final home game as a Blue Raider, also scoring 15 points while adding six rebounds and four assists in all 40 minutes played. Eldridge walks out of Biggers Sports Center for the final time tallying 10 points and four rebounds in his final home showing.

The scoring for Thomas More came in a tight bundle that proved to be favorable. Ryan Batte rolled in 19 points to lead the way, while Luke Rudy trailed close behind with 17 of his own. Max Knisley & Garren Bertsch each added 12 points in the Saints seventh straight victory.

Thomas More jumped out early in the contest by grabbing a six point lead in the first five minutes. However, it was lost after Lindsey Wilson executed a 16-9 scoring run over a five minute span of play. Once LWC grabbed the lead, the game became a stalemate with neither team able to fully gain strong momentum over the other. A defensive stronghold began to control the pace of play, as no baskets were scored in the final two minutes. The Blue Raiders benefited from this, holding a 30-29 lead heading into the halftime intermission.

Brooks led the LWC first half scoring with nine points on 50 percent shooting from the field, while Stotts & Payton Cundiff each garnered five points. For the Saints, Batte led his squad with 10 points.

The start of the second half was slow and ultimately plagued Lindsey Wilson for the remainder of the game, as Thomas More quickly amassed a 10-2 scoring run in four minutes of action to build some much needed breathing room. The Saints rolled on in the contest leading by 13 with less than 10 minutes remaining and by seven with just under five minutes left. Eldridge cut the lead down to five with a jump shot in the paint, but Thomas More put its foot to the pedal and finished the game on a high note putting home six straight free throws in crunch time to secure the 73-60 victory.

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team finishes the 2020 campaign with a 10-5 record at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders return to the court on Thursday, Feb. 27 to face Cumberlands (Ky.) on the road in Williamsburg. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
