LWC Wrestling drops dual against No. 6 Cumberlands 24-15 By Christopher Coombs Williamsburg, KY - The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team lost to No. 6 Cumberlands (KY) on the road via a 24-15 result at the UC Volleyball Gym. The Blue Raiders strung together four straight decision victories from 157 to the 184-pound bout but two losses to close out the night ultimately cost Lindsey Wilson. Cumberlands and the Blue Raiders split the ten matches - each picking up five wins - but three pin victories by the Patriots proved to be too much to overcome. Austin Franco upset Lindsey Wilson's Cagen Wallace (No. 5 at 125) on close 6-5 decision. Sam Bacon then fell to Jacob Seto (No. 9 at 133) on a pin at the 43-second mark of the second period to spot Cumberlands a 9-0 early lead. Trent Johnson (No. 12 at 141) took a 3-1 lead into the third period before an escape by Bryce Nickle (No. 11 at 141) early in the period trimmed his lead to just one point. Johnson managed to hold on to his lead the rest of the way winning on a 3-2 decision. Austin Ramsey then fell to Tres Leon (No. 1 at 149) on a fall at the 1:10 mark of the match. Latrell Davis (No. 2 at 149) wrestled up a weight class at 157-pounds where he picked up the Blue Raiders second win of the night with a 5-4 decision over Chasen Brown (No. 16 at 149). Derrick Smallwood (No. 2 at 157) also wrestled up a weight class as he downed Jacob McNutt (No. 7 at 165) on a 9-5 decision. The win cut the Patriots lead to 15-9. Joe Koontz (No. 18 at 165) wrestled at the 174-pound weight class against Brady Emerson. Koontz scored a takedown in the third period to take a 2-0 lead and racked up 3:42 of ride time to win the Blue Raiders third straight match on a 3-1 decision. Trevor Lawson (No. 3 at 184) tied the match at 15-15 when he took down Max Emerson on a 5-0 decision. Cumberlands Eric Deluse (No. 4 at 197) put Cumberlands ahead with one match to go when he beat Avery Buckman (No. 20 at 197) on a pin. Raynel Brown then dropped his match to Aaron Johnson on a 5-1 decision to close out the night. Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Feb. 21-22 when they kick off postseason action in Bowling Green, Kentucky at the Mid-South Conference Tournament. This story was posted on 2020-02-08 06:34:14
