LWC Men's basketball falls to Cumberland in MSC road battle

Lebanon, TN - The No. 19-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team was upset by Cumberland (TN) 63-60 on Monday evening at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.

In a game that featured eight ties and 12 lead changes, the Blue Raiders (12-5, 1-2 MSC) ultimately came up just short in their second straight Mid-South Conference loss. Neither team was able to create any separation all night as it was LWC who held the largest lead of the night at six points halfway through the second quarter. The Phoenix's largest lead of the night was five points which came multiple times early in the first half.

Lindsey Wilson's streaky shooting led to a 43.4 mark from the field, connecting on 23-of-53 attempts. Cumberland managed just a 37.9 shooting percentage but made 16-of-18 attempts from the charity stripe which proved to be the difference-maker. LWC made 6-of-8 attempts from the foul line.



Reece Brooks once again paced the Blue Raider offense, finishing with 18 points off 4-of-9 shooting from deep. Avery Edwards added 13 points as Kel Stotts had 10. Matthew Eldridge finished with a team-high 12 rebounds.

Cumberland managed to lead by as many as five points during the opening ten minutes of action three times but LWC was able to trim the deficit each time before tieing the game at 20 with 9:28 on the clock. A three by Payton Cundiff with 5:10 to play gave the Blue Raiders their largest lead of the half at 29-24 but it was their last basket.

Lindsey Wilson struggled to pull away late going 0-of-7 from the field while committing four turnovers. Cumberland also struggled from the field going 2-of-13 over the final 8:13 but would manage to pull within one point at 29-28 at the break. Cumberland added six turnovers to close out the half.

Across the first 11 minutes of the second half, the Blue Raiders and the Phoenix were never separated by more than three points as there was eight lead changes and three ties.

Trailing by two, Stotts knocked down a three that spurred on an 8-0 run to give LWC a 50-44 advantage with 7:27 to play. Cumberland answered with an 8-0 run of their own to regain the lead by two with just under five to play.

Cundiff tied the game at 52 at the charity stripe but it was as close as LWC would get to taking the lead over the final four minutes. LWC would trail by as few as one point three times over the waning minutes but could never get over the hump after effecint work by Cumberland at the foul line, going 6-of-6.

Cumberland's Jalen Duke finished with a game-high 20 points as DeMari Davis grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Blue Raiders return to action on Thursday when they welcome Shawnee State (Ohio) to the confines of Biggers Sports Center at 8 p.m. CT.
