LWC Men's Soccer falls to Central Methodist By Christopher Coombs Irvine, CA - The No. 7 Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team fell to No. 1 Central Methodist in the NAIA National Tournament Semifinals by a 2-0 final score on Friday evening. The Blue Raiders (16-4-1) outpaced the Eagles 16-9 in shots but it was Central Methodist (24-1-0) who held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Eagles wasted no time taking the lead scoring in just the 7th minute. Marcos German set a cross into the box that LWC goalkeeper David Coffey tried to punch away from danger. The ball deflected away but found the head of Carlos Scheckermann for the score into a wide-open goal at the far post. Moments before the Central Methodist goal the Blue Raiders nearly tallied a goal of their own. Akean Shackleford blasted a shot from just 10-yard out but the attempt was cleared to safety as he was heavily guarded by two defenders. The next 25 minutes of action was evenly paced as both squads generated quality scoring chances. Both would register three shots as LWC managed to put one of their attempts on frame. Lindsey Wilson added three more shots, one on goal, over the final 15 minutes of the half, to finish with a 7-4 advantage in shots, but just couldn't finish on their chances. Renan Ramos nearly leveled the score in the 43rd minute with a strike from just outside the penalty area. His attempts sped toward the far post but a diving Vince Gelei got his hand in it to steer the attempt to safety. After an even 15 minutes of play to open the second half, Shackleford nearly leveled the score once again. Driving down the middle of the field, he crossed his defender to the left before firing his attempt towards the far post from just outside the penalty area. The curving shot was tracked by a diving Gelei halting the Blue Raider scoring chance. It was the Blue Raiders best chance to level the score in the game. Central Methodist put the game away in the 87th minute when Daniel Hernandez scored on an assist from Luc Alvarez. The Blue Raiders advanced all the way to the semifinals for the 15th time in program history, accomplishing the feat for the first time since 2013. They are now 9-6 all-time in the semifinals of the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Lindsey Wilson finishes the season with a 16-4-1 overall record. This story was posted on 2019-12-07 07:16:11
