LWC Volleyball battles back to defeat Eastern Oregon

By Grace Blomstedt

Sioux City, IA - The No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team defeated No.7-ranked Eastern Oregon in a five-set battle Thursday to conclude pool play at the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center.

Lindsey Wilson (32-5) improves to 3-0 in Pool G and claims the pool's top-seed entering tournament play Friday. Eastern Oregon (31-4) advances into tournament play as the pool's second-seed after finishing 2-1 in the pool.

A slow start in the opening set gave EOU a 3-0 lead but Lindsey Wilson fought back to even the score at 7-7. LWC took its first lead at 12-11 after a Kasia Niderla kill, but the lead would be short lived when the Mountaineers responded with a kill of their own. Eastern Oregon never trailed again in the frame, but would not be able to pull away by more than three points. The first set would see seven ties before EOU won it 25-23.

In the set the Blue Raiders notched 18 kills with a .400 hitting percentage. Niderla tallied seven kills on 10 attempts and Alexis Smith and Elly Burke contributed four apiece. LWC recorded 21 digs, led by Lauren Larzelere with six.

The Mountaineers never trailed in the second set and were able to garner an eight-point lead at 13-5. Alexis Smith pounded out a kill to make it 19-14 which began a 9-3 point run for the Blue Raiders which tied up the set for the first time at 22-22. The next point would be a marathon rally eclipsed by an Eastern Oregon kill. Niderla recorded her 14th kill of the match to tie it back up at 23-23 before EOU would win the next two points to claim the set 25-23.

Eastern Oregon's block played a large part in slowing down LWC's attack, recording four team blocks compared to Lindsey Wilson's one. The Blue Raiders hit .188 in the frame and Niderla notched another seven kills. LWC's defense managed 28 digs in the set to keep the Blue Raiders in it.

Lindsey Wilson was in charge out of the gate in the third set, scoring eight of the first 10 points played. The Blue Raiders would lead by as many as nine points five different times before the Mountaineers went on a nine-point scoring run to make it 21-21 before being silenced by an Elly Burke kill. EOU would tie it up at 23-23 again before Lindsey Wilson would take the set 25-23.

Defense played a large role in the set for both teams. Lindsey Wilson recorded 33 digs, led by Camryn Rich with 13. While the block did not make a huge impact statistically, it forced the Mountaineers to hit .164. Smith was responsible for seven of LWC's 16 kills in the set.

The third set was a marathon. Lindsey Wilson trailed Eastern Oregon 9-3 before tying it up at 10-10 after three hitting errors by the Mountaineers and three Blue Raider kills. The teams would exchange points for the remainder of the set, neither team having more than a three-point lead. The set would be tied at 17, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28 before Lindsey Wilson would take the set 30-28 with a Mariana Pratali and Burke block.

The Blue Raiders recorded 22 kills, 27 digs, and two blocks in the tight set. Smith pounded out seven more kills in the set, while Niderla and Burke added six and five, respectively. Burke and Larzelere each tallied eight digs.

The fifth set began with an even exchanging of points to make it 4-4. The Mountaineers would then pull away to make it 10-5 and force Lindsey Wilson to call a timeout. Out of the huddle, the Blue Raiders proceeded to win the next six points to take the lead at 11-10. Eastern Oregon would tie it back up at 13-13 before LWC would cap off the match with a Burke kill to take it 15-13.

Lindsey Wilson recorded a slight statistical advantage in the final frame. The Blue Raiders recorded 11 digs, seven kills, and three blocks compared to the Mountaineers' 10 digs, six kills, and two blocks.

Rich recorded her third double-double of the week in the match with 64 assists and 27 digs. Burke earned her second double-double of the week producing 15 kills and 27 digs. Larzelere led the way for the Blue Raiders defensively with 30 digs. Niderla and Smith both recorded double-digit kills to lead LWC with 28 and 23, respectively.

Megan Bunn recorded a double-double while leading the way offensively for the Mountaineers with 32 kills and 20 digs. Kiley McMurtrey tallied 27 digs and Aspen Christiansen added 23 digs to lead EOU.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action tomorrow in the First Round of tournament action at 1:30pmCT against the second seed out of Pool H at the Tyson Events Center. The Blue Raiders will find out who they play later tonight.
