LWC Volleyball defeats Reinhardt in NAIA opener By Grace Blomstedt Sioux City, IA - No. 10 Lindsey Wilson volleyball opened up its 2019 NAIA National Tournament with a 3-2 victory over No. 24 Reinhardt (GA) today at the Tyson Events Center. The Blue Raiders (30-5) move to 1-0 in Pool G while the Eagles (33-3) fall to 0-1 in pool play. Eastern Oregon (30-3) defeated Madonna (MI) (25-13) 3-1 in the first Pool G match of the day. Lindsey Wilson boasted an advantage statistically in the 25-13, 23-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-10 win. LWC marked a .277 hitting percentage compared to RU's .138. The Blue Raiders accumulated 10 team blocks compared to Reinhardt's two. Lindsey Wilson cruised to win the opening set 25-13. The Blue Raiders featured a .471 hitting percentage in the opening frame. Alexis Smith led the Blue Raiders with eight kills paired with a .438 hitting percentage. The Lindsey Wilson defense tallied 18 digs to force the Eagles to hit .156. After a very strong first set, the Blue Raiders offense slowed down in the second, marking a .282 hitting percentage in the frame. Kasia Niderla and Smith led LWC with five kills apiece. The Eagles showed more life defensively in the set and were able to scrape out the win, however, Lindsey Wilson recorded more kills (15-13), digs (15-14), and blocks (4-0) in the set. Lindsey Wilson struggled to put the ball away in the third set, hitting an even .000, due to only producing seven kills paired with seven errors on 38 swings. Both teams relied heavily on their defensive play, each managing to record more than 20 digs in the frame. The Blue Raiders showed life in the fourth set. Scoring was back and forth until Lindsey Wilson pulled away for an 8-2 scoring run after a Jelena Lazovic kill. LWC led by as much as seven at 21-14 before finishing the set 25-19. Niderla notched another five kills in the set, while Elly Burke and Lazovic each added three. Lauren Larzelere and Abby Grubbs each snagged eight digs in the frame, while LWC accumulated three blocks. The Blue Raiders never trailed in the fifth set. Lindsey Wilson started off hot, scoring the first four points off of two Niderla kills and a Lazovic kill. Lindsey Wilson's largest advantage was at 4-0 and 14-10 until ultimately winning the frame 15-10 with a Burke service ace. Lindsey Wilson hit .407 in the set while limiting Reinhardt to .214. Niderla led the attack with six kills while Peyton Johnston accumulated seven digs in the set to lead the Blue Raiders. Burke and Camryn Rich each recorded their tenth double-double of the season. Burke produced 11 kills while tallying 15 digs. Rich recorded 54 assists and 15 digs in her national tournament debut. Niderla finished the match with 23 kills while Smith accumulated 16. Three other Blue Raiders also posted double-digit digs in the match. Lilo Larzelere led the team with 28 digs while Johnston and Grubbs each added 17. Reinhardt's Tessa Colden led the Eagles with 15 kills. Erinn Marroquin and Carlee Baxter each tallied 16 digs in the match. This is is the ninth 30-win season in the program's history and eighth straight.
