LWC Volleyball advances to MSC Tournament finals

By Chris Wells

Bowling Green, KY - Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson volleyball cruised into the Mid-South Conference finals with a 3-0 win over Life (GA) on Friday night at Bowling Green Arena.

The Blue Raiders (28-5) advance to face second-seeded Thomas More (KY) at 6pmCT on Saturday, November 16, 2019. Lindsey Wilson has won 14 straight matches in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. The last loss came in the tournament finals in 2014.

The Lindsey Wilson offense continued to roll during the conference tournament. After posting a .347 attack in Thursday's win over Campbellsville (KY), the Blue Raiders produced 46 kills and just seven errors for a .361 hitting percent in the 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 win.

A trio of Blue Raiders posted double-digit kills. Alexis Smith recorded a team-high 13 kills, Elly Burke added 12 kills and Kasia Niderla chipped in 11 in the win. The trio combined to post a .388 attack for the match.

Camryn Rich recorded her second straight double-double in the tournament while orchestrating the Blue Raider attack. She finished with a match-high 35 assists while adding 11 digs. Burke joined Rich with a double-double, adding 12 digs to her dozen kills.

Defensively, Lauren Larzelere posted a team-high 17 digs while Burke and Mariana Pratali each recorded three blocks.

Lindsey Wilson never trailed in the opening set.

Leading 16-15, the Blue Raiders scored five of the next seven points to take a 21-17 lead. It was another mini-run -- a 4-2 LWC spurt -- that closed out the 25-19 win. The Blue Raiders committed just one hitting error in 38 swings in the opening frame, finishing with a .395 attack.

The Running Eagles (20-11) committed seven errors in the first set -- the same amount the Blue Raiders committed in the match. Life hit .158 in the first set and .161 for the match.

Lindsey Wilson was even more efficient in the second set -- producing a .419 attack in the frame compared to Life's best-attacking set of the match, .262.

Lindsey Wilson once again finished strong in the second. Leading 21-20, Smith pounded a kill across the net and Life followed with an attacking error to give the Blue Raiders the 23-20 lead. The Running Eagles cut the deficit to 23-21, before committing back-to-back errors to give the Blue Raiders the 25-21 win.

In the third set, the two teams exchanged the lead in the early stages of the set before the Blue Raiders took control midway through the frame. Leading 9-8, Pratali and Burke sandwiched kills around a Life error to take a 12-8 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson extended the lead to 18-11 before the Running Eagles made one last push. Life trimmed the deficit to five (20-15) only to have the Blue Raiders win the last five points to take the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

Rich started the run with a service ace followed by back-to-back kills from Burke. A Smith kill gave the Blue Raiders match point and a Life attacking error -- its 19th of the match -- concluded the evening.

Lindsey Wilson meets Thomas More for the tournament title and the automatic bid into the national tournament on Saturday. First serve is set for 6pmCT at Bowling Green Arena.
