LWC Women's Soccer battles No. 17 Cumberlands on Sat

The No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team sits one match away from claiming the 2019 Mid-South Conference Tournament championship. The Blue Raiders battle No. 17-ranked Cumberlands (KY) in the championship game at Jim Ross Field in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Saturday at 11amCT.

The Blue Raiders women's soccer team (14-3-1) defeated Life (GA) in the tournament quarterfinals by a final score of 7-1. Lindsey Wilson earned a berth in the championship match after defeating Cumberland (TN) in the semifinals by a final score of 4-2.



The Patriots women's soccer team (14-2-1) took care of Shawnee State (Ohio) in the quarterfinals by a final score of 6-0. Cumberlands advanced to Saturday's championship match with the Blue Raiders after defeating Thomas More (Ky.) 4-1 in the semifinals.

The regular season matchup between Lindsey Wilson and Cumberlands took place on October 27th at Walter S. Reuling Stadium. The match moved as a stalemate all the way to the end of regulation, with both teams eager to gain the upper hand. In the 106th minute in double overtime, sophomore midfielder Thea Birgerud sent a free-kick strike past the Patriots goalie for the golden goal to secure the victory for the Blue Raiders. Despite Lindsey Wilson walking away with the victory, the Patriots applied heavy pressure on offense all match, firing 32 total shots with 13 being on goal.

For the Blue Raiders this season, sophomore forward and MSC player of the year Sina Cavelti serves as the anchor for the team's offense, leading the team with 17 goals, 39 points, 72 total shots, and 37 shots on goal. Cavelti currently averages 2.17 points per match, which sits atop the Mid-South Conference. Senior midfielder Emilie Liljered has notched nine goals and three assists this season and sits behind Cavelti with 21 points. Birgerud holds the team lead with nine assists and has recorded two or more points in five of the last eight matches. On defense, senior goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic has accumulated a 4-0-0 record, 32 saves, and two shutout victories.

The Patriots come into Saturday's championship match on a four-match winning streak, while only allowing 10 total goals on defense this season. On offense, the duo of junior midfielder Shara Randez and freshman midfielder Naira Lopez headline the attack for the Patriots. Lopez leads Cumberlands in goals (10) and points (25) this season and has tallied two goals and three assists for seven points in the MSC tournament so far. As for Randez this season, she's tallied seven goals and seven assists for 21 points and has recorded team-highs in shots (89) and shots on goal (48). Randez has notched three goals and one assist for seven points so far in the MSC Tournament. On defense, freshman goalkeeper Nicole Panis has garnered 54 saves and five shutout victories en route to a 14-2-1 record.
