LWC Volleyball defeats Cumberland in three-sets

By Brady Budke

The No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) in a three-set Mid-South Conference battle tonight at Biggers Sports Center.

Sophomore Alexis Smith led the Blue Raiders with 11 kills, while freshman Kasia Niderla and senior Elly Burke trailed behind her with eight and seven kills respectively. Freshman Camryn Rich recorded her seventh double-double of the season, as she finished with 25 assists and 11 digs. On defense, Lindsey Wilson notched 10 total team blocks, with Rich and sophomore Abby Grubbs leading the way with 11 digs each.

Set one began as a back and forth battle, as the scoring met a 13-13 tie early on. A late surge by the Blue Raiders created a comfortable cushion in the closing stages of the set. Despite a final push by Cumberland to keep the set alive, a Smith kill finished set one in a 25-19 victory for Lindsey Wilson. Smith led Lindsey Wilson on offense with six kills, while Rich recorded 10 assists. The Blue Raiders hit .364, while limiting the Phoenix to a .125 mark.

With their momentum shifting over into set two, the Blue Raiders gained an early 10-4 lead in the set over the Phoenix. Lindsey Wilson continued to roll all the way to the 20 point mark, as the defense held Cumberland to just 12 points with the match in the closing stages. The controlled set two for LWC ended in a 25-16 set victory. Burke recorded three kills, while Rich tallied five assists. On defense, the Blue Raiders notched six total team blocks in the set.

Attempting to force a fourth set to keep the match alive, the Phoenix battled the Blue Raiders into an early 10-10 stalemate in set three. However, Lindsey Wilson exploded for a 10-4 run to complete late separation, transitioning into a 25-15 set three victory for the Blue Raiders 23rd win of the season. Niderla and Smith had three kills respectively in the set for LWC, while Rich led with 10 assists. On defense, Lindsey Wilson tallied 19 total digs in the match-clinching set.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 6pmCT on Tuesday, October 29th to face Campbellsville (KY) on the road in a Mid-South Conference battle.
