Senator Wise presented Friend of Kentucky Cities award

By Michele Hill

Jamestown, KY - Senator Max Wise (R-Campbellsville) was honored with a "Friend of Kentucky Cities" award Monday night at the Russell County Courthouse during a joint meeting of the Jamestown City Council and Russell Springs City Council. The "Friend of Kentucky Cities" award is given by the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) to legislators who perform outstanding work in the legislature advocating for issues that impact cities across the state.

"It is truly humbling to be selected as a Friend of Kentucky Cities," Senator Max Wise said. "When our cities prosper, the entire state ultimately benefits. I am proud to support efforts to enhance Kentucky's local levels, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for legislation that supports the communities in the 16th District."

Senator Wise was instrumental in securing the passage of Senate Bill 1, "The School Safety and Resiliency Act." The measure, which was often referred to as General Assembly Bill 1, addresses various components of school safety from mental health needs to school resource officers (SROs). It also requires districts to appoint a school safety coordinator and establishes the position of a state school safety marshal.

The Kentucky League of Cities worked with Senator Wise and Representative Bam Carney (R-Campbellsville) on the drafting of the legislation due to the impact school safety has on local communities. "Most schools in the state are located in cities, and it is important to everyone who lives in the state that we do our best to secure the safety of our children and educators," remarked KLC Deputy Executive Director J.D. Chaney. "We are grateful to the members of the School Safety Working Group and Senator Wise for recognizing the important role cities play in this issue."

KLC Executive Director/CEO Jonathan Steiner praised Senator Wise for the collaborative approach he took in drafting and securing passage of the measure. "Senator Wise was deliberative and comprehensive in his approach to the issue of school safety," he stated. "This legislation is a great beginning as we work to tackle the broad issues that threaten our city schools, and we look forward to continuing to work with Senator Wise on additional legislation."

Founded in 1927, the Kentucky League of Cities is a membership association of more than 370 cities across the commonwealth. KLC presents the "Friend of Kentucky Cities" award to legislators who perform outstanding work advocating for issues that impact cities across the state.
