LWC Volleyball splits matches at Columbia College Fall Classic

Columbia, MO - The No. 13-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's volleyball team split a pair of matches against receiving votes Ottawa (KS) and No. 9 Columbia (MO) at the Columbia College Fall Classic.

The Blue Raider (20-4) opened their day with a 3-0 sweep over Ottawa (16-10) before falling in five sets to Columbia (21-2) in the nightcap.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action Saturday morning when they take on William Woods (MO) at 9amCT during the final day of the Columbia College Fall Classic.


Lindsey Wilson - Ottawa: 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-17)
The Blue Raiders opened their tournament with a sweep of Ottawa as they produced a .247 hitting percentage in the 97 swings as they held the Braves under .200 at .193. LWC recorded ten more kills than their counterparts with 42 for the match while committing 18 errors.

Kasia Niderla and Alexis Smith led the offensive attack as they tallied 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Camryn Rich set up the attack with her match-high 29 assists. Lauren Larzelere once again led the defensive efforts with eight digs.

The match started with a back-and-forth opening frame as Lindsey Wilson would lead 15-14 before managing to score eight of ten straight points to a 23-16 advantage. Ottawa would claw back but LWC would take the set 25-22.

In the second set, the Blue Raiders would trail by as many as five points at 15-10 but would battle back to tie the set at 16 all. From there LWC and OU would be tied seven-times all the way to 24-24. Lindsey Wilson would score the final two points of the set to take the 2-0 match lead at 26-24.

Lindsey Wilson would lead by as many as 13 in the final stanza as they led 18-5 before winning 25-17 to complete the sweep.

The Blue Raiders would fall in their second match of the day to Columbia. The loss to the No. 9 team in the NAIA moves LWC to 2-3 this season when playing against a ranked opponent.

Columbia held a 71-58 advantage in kills as they produced a .241 hitting percentage compared to the Blue Raiders .210.

Niderla led the way with 20 kills as Smith had 13 and Elly Burke chipped in with 10 kills and nine digs to just miss out on a double-double. Rich had a career-high 44 assists in the match while also managing a match and career-high 18 digs. Larzelere finished with double digits digs, recording 15.

The first frame was knotted at 13-13 before the Blue Raiders increased their advantage to as many as eight points twice before taking the set 25-17. The second set was a tight battle as the squads found themselves tied eight times with neither team holding more than a four-point advantage before Columbia took the set 25-23 with two straight points

Lindsey Wilson would lead by as many as three in the third set at 13-10 but would see the match tied nine more times to a 26-26 score. The Blue Raiders had set point at 26-25 but dropped three straight points to fall behind 2-1 in the match.

The Blue Raiders would level the match a 2-2 in the fourth set as they battled in another close contest to their advantage at 25-23. LWC would never trail in the set while also never leading by more than four points.

Tied at 5-5 in the final set, Columbia would rattle off ten straight points to defeat the Blue Raiders 3-2.
