LWC Volleyball sweeps Cumberlands at home By Grace Blomstedt The No. 13-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team swept Mid-South Conference opponent Cumberlands (Ky.) 3-0 on Tuesday in Biggers Sports Center. The sweep is the Blue Raiders 13th of the season. Lindsey Wilson (19-4, 10-2 MSC) handed Cumberlands (12-10, 3-7 MSC) its third straight loss. Consistent play led to the Blue Raiders victory in three set fashion (25-17, 25-17, 25-17). Lauren Larzelere led the way defensively for Lindsey Wilson with 25 of the team's 54 digs. Camila Leite recorded three block assists and one solo block to lead the Blue Raider's blocking efforts. Kasia Niderla posted 15 kills on just 25 swings earning a .520 hitting percentage while Rich tallied 33 assists to record a match high. Set one consisted of back and forth play, featuring 15 ties. Lindsey Wilson took its first lead of the set at 11-10 after a Leite kill. The Blue Raiders would not pull away from the Patriots more than two points until 18-17 which led to Rich's seven-point service run to finish the set. LWC hit .156 in the opening set while limiting UC to a .048 hitting percentage. Niderla recorded five kills and Larzelere managed 11 digs. The Blue Raiders controlled the second set, never allowing the Patriots to hold a lead. Lindsey Wilson pulled away at 9-6 when Larzelere went on a small serving run of her own, which included back to back service aces. From that point on, the Blue Raiders never let the Patriots within six points. Elly Burke clinched the set with her second service ace of the match. Cumberlands managed to out hit Lindsey Wilson and record a match high hitting percentage (.344) in the set. The final set featured 11 ties but Cumberland's largest lead was limited to one point. The Blue Raiders held a four-point cushion twice at 13-9 and again at 20-16 before pulling away on a Peyton Johnston service run. The Blue Raiders would take the final set 25-17. Lindsey Wilson managed to limit Cumberlands to an even .000 hitting percentage in the set, due in large part to three LWC team blocks. The Blue Raiders marked a .323 hitting percentage and Niderla led the way hitting 1.000 with five kills on just five attempts. Larzelere tallied eight digs in the frame. The Blue Raiders are back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Columbia College Fall Classic in Columbia, Missouri. This story was posted on 2019-10-16 06:33:02
