Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote Initiative

By Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY - The Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA), within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, is joining schools and cultural institutions nationwide in commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which extended the right to vote to millions of women in 1920.

As part of the Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote initiative, KDLA is one of a limited number of places that will exhibit a pop-up display created by the National Archives and presented in part by the National Archives Foundation. The display contains messages exploring the history of the 19th Amendment, women's voting rights before and after the amendment, and its impact today.

The Rightfully Hers Pop-up Display can be viewed in the KDLA lobby, 300 Coffee Tree Rd, Frankfort, KY, Monday through Friday from 9amET - 4pmET.

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary, Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote highlights the relentless struggle of diverse activists throughout U.S. history to secure voting rights for all American women. This landmark voting rights victory was made possible by decades of persistent political engagement, and serves as a critical milestone in women's battle for the right to vote.

Kentucky passed the first statewide women's suffrage law in 1838 that allowed widows and single women over the age of 21 who owned property to vote in specific elections. Kentucky voted in favor of the 19th Amendment on January 6, 1920 extending the right to vote to all women in Kentucky.
