Boxing and Wrestling Commission hosts Combat Sports Symposium By Krista Locke Frankfort, KY - This month the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Commission (KBWC) sponsored the second Combat Sports Symposium, attracting Kentucky combat sports athletes and promoters to the Danny Davis Arena in Louisville. The Symposium offered an educational forum for combat sport athletes, trainers, promoters, referees, judges and medical professionals. The event provided a forum to discuss leading strength and conditioning techniques, marketing and branding, health and nutrition management, ring official conduct and appropriate care for sports-related injuries. This year, professional wrestler and actor Al Snow keynoted the event and offered seasoned career advice to athletes. Additional speakers included retired mixed martial artist, boxer and Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran, Chris Lytle, and Board Chairman Jason Smith and Vice Chairman Dino Lucarelli. "The KBWC is dedicated to growing the combat sports profession in the Commonwealth, and to educating athletes about managing their health," said Chairman Smith. Chairman Smith and Public Protection Cabinet attorney Bryan Morrow outlined regulation improvements, making combat sports more accessible and less cost prohibitive for athletes, without sacrificing athlete safety and well-being. Some improvements include increasing the age to 38 for medical panel reviews, and allowing bloodwork to be valid for 365 days from the date of withdrawal. During the Symposium, KBWC awarded the Danny Davis Lifetime Achievement Award to Vanessa Bohleber-Higdon of Hardrock Promotions. The award honors individuals who work diligently for the advancement of combat sports in the Commonwealth. Previous winners include Danny Davis and Muhammad Ali. "It is an honor to receive the Danny Davis Lifetime Achievement Award. It is truly a dream come true. I extend my sincere thanks to the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Commission for this honor," said Higdon. Learn more about the KBWA at kbwa.ky.gov. This story was posted on 2019-09-30 20:32:24
