KYTC launches new online portal for permit requests

The new system features real-time, intelligent routing and auto-issuance, designed to be more efficient for overweight/over-dimensional permit requests

By Jordan Smith

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) launched a new online system today for issuing travel permits for overweight/over-dimensional (OW/OD) vehicle drivers. Using verified, real-time data, the program provides intelligent routing based on road closures, vehicle weight, and vehicle dimensions. It also features automated issuance for common permit types distributed by the Cabinet.

"By moving the majority of the process online, we're making it simple for OW/OD drivers to travel on Kentucky roadways," said Department of Vehicle Regulation Commissioner Matt Henderson. "Now, almost every permit can be issued instantly from your computer at work or home, 24/7/365. We're cutting red tape to make the permitting process more efficient for staff and more convenient for customers to haul everything from oversize equipment to boats."

Additional upgrades include the ability for users to check the status of their application with real-time updates, electronic payment options, and online renewals for annual permits.

Current system users will be redirected from the old website and required to register in the new system. KYTC will no longer accept applications via fax or email.

KYTC, in partnership with Bentley Systems, Inc., developed the secure online portal to generate safe, efficient travel routes and streamline the permitting process. Previously, KYTC staff manually reviewed an average of 400 OW/OD applications daily.

Users should note that routes that were once approved may be denied due to an issue detected during the real-time evaluation - like a new load restriction on the desired route. In the event a route is denied, a request can be submitted to the OW/OD office to review the route.

In 2018, KYTC issued more than 100,000 OW/OD permits. About 96,000 were single trip permits and just over 5,500 were annual permits. Both types can now be auto-issued in the new portal.
