LWC Football uses big plays to beat Warner 73-29

By Chris Wells

Lakeland, FL -- No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson football scored a season-high 73 points -- including a pair of defensive touchdowns -- to beat host Warner (Fla.) 73-29 today at Viking Stadium.

Trailing 10-7 four minutes into the game, the Blue Raiders scored 28 unanswered points and never looked back to improve to 4-0 on the season. It was a day of big plays as the Blue Raiders scored seven of their 10 touchdowns on plays of 30 yards or more.

Cameron Dukes led the Blue Raider offense with a career-high 341 passing yards and a program-record seven touchdown tosses in the game. He connected on 19 of his 23 passes while throwing touchdown passes to five different receivers in the win.

While Dukes and the offense racked up 484 total yards -- the fourth straight 400-plus yard game this season -- the Blue Raider defense scored its first two touchdowns of the season. James Todd returned an interception 55 yards for a pick-six during the 28-0 spurt and Luke Bowman scooped and scored on a Warner fumble to give the Blue Raiders a 35-10 lead.

Lindsey Wilson won the turnover battle today 4-1 to improve to 45-1 all-time when forcing the opponent into more miscues.

Warner -- who made a conscience effort to stop the run -- slowed the Lindsey Wilson running attack to just 79 yards on the day. But the Royals (0-3) had no answer for Dukes and Payton Veraldi -- who combined for 405 yards through the air.

Dukes -- who entered the game with seven touchdown passes this season -- connected with Jaylen Boyd on a 60-yard score up the left sideline. He added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Lewis and a 68-yard score to Boyd all in the first quarter. Boyd finished with three catches for a career-best 127 receiving yards.

Warner ended the Lindsey Wilson scoring run with 12:15 left in the second quarter with a six-yard touchdown toss from Dylan Blair to Theodore Hammonds to trim the deficit to 35-16.

The Blue Raiders responded with two more long-range touchdowns -- a 43-yard strike to Terrill Cole and a 42-yarder to Tre Dickerson. Dickerson ended with four catches for 101 yards -- his first career 100-yard receiving game.

Dickerson added a second score in the third quarter while Dimitrius Patterson added his first touchdown catch later in the quarter to give Lindsey Wilson a 63-23 lead.

The Patterson score almost never happen. Bowman -- who set up the touchdown with an interception -- nearly scored for the second time when he returned the pick 63 yards to the Warner four-yard line. Three plays later, Dukes hit a sliding Patterson to set the program record for touchdown tosses in a game.

Jefhry Taylor joined Patterson with his first career score in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run for the 73-29 lead and eventual win. The 73 points match the fourth-most points scored in a game for the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson scored 73 last season in a shutout win over Cincinnati Christian (Ohio).

Cordarien Trice led the Blue Raider defense with six tackles in the game while T.J. James joined Todd and Bowman with an interception.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 6pmCT on Thursday, Oct. 3, as the Blue Raiders travel to No. 18-ranked Bethel (Tenn.) in McKenzie, Tennessee.
