LWC Football defeats Point 34-9 on Saturday

By Christopher Coombs

The No. 13-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team dominated play in the first half of their 34-9 win over Point (GA) on Saturday afternoon at Blue Raider Stadium.

The Blue Raider (2-0, 1-0 MSC) defense would limit Point's (0-2, 0-0 MSC) offense to just 51 yards in the first half as the Skyhawks would finish with 278 yards of total offense for the game.

Lindsey Wilson welcomes Faulkner (Ala.) to Blue Raider Stadium, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY, in their third straight home contest to open the season next Saturday at 2:30pmCT. The game will serve as the Blue Raiders homecoming game.

Lindsey Wilson racked up 409 yards of offense against Point as Cameron Dukes threw for three scores, completing 26-of-35 attempts for 272 yards. Jaylen Boyd rushed for a game-high 89 yards and one touchdown. Terrill Cole Jr. had a game-high 108 yards receiving while Jay Gaudlock chipped in with 76 and one score and Joshua Lewis had five receptions for 45 yards and two scores.

Luke Bowman led the Blue Raider defensive efforts with eight tackles - 2.5 for a loss - as J.T. Lyon recorded seven of his own, 4 of which were unassisted.

Lindsey Wilson would defer the opening kick and quickly force a Skyhawk three-and-out to give LWC their first possession of the contest. Starting from their own 48-yard line the Blue Raiders drove 48-yards on 12 plays as Boyd capped off the drive from one yard out.

The Blue Raider defense proved to be too much to handle for the Point offense in the first quarter of play as they forced the Skyhawks into three straight three-and-outs. LWC limited Point to negative three yards of total offense during the first 15 minutes of action.

Point's defense would record the game's first turnover on the second play of the second quarter when Dukes' pass to the left corner of the end zone from the Skyhawk 27-yard line was intercepted by the Skyhawks Micah Oglesby.

After trading possessions the Blue Raiders offense would mount their longest drive of the game. Starting from their own seven-yard line, a five-yard rush by Boyd set up back-to-back deep balls by Dukes. The junior quarterback first found Gaudlock over the middle for 34-yards before connecting with Cole Jr down the right sideline for 45-yards.

The connections set up LWC deep in Point territory at the nine-yard line. Darius Clark would score on just the fourth play of the drive. He scampered into the end zone untouched to increase the LWC advantage to 14-0 with just over six minutes left in the half.

The Blue Raider defense dominated play over the first 30 minutes as they limited the Skyhawks to just 51 yards on 31 plays. Lyon led the charge as he recorded five tackles, four unassisted. Bowman tallied four tackles of his own as C.J. Dickerson produced 1.5 sacks.

Lindsey Wilson hit the ground running in the second half as Hunter Watkins took the opening kickoff 56-yards into Point territory at the 32-yard line. Watkins finished the game with 119 yards on his two kickoff returns.

A few plays later Dukes would roll out of the pocket to his left and find Gaudlock for two yards and the score. The point-after attempt was blocked away as LWC would lead 20-0.

The Blue Raiders would strike again with 4:40 left in the third quarter. Dukes found Lewis on a screen pass who then broke free for 29-yards and the score. The drive lasted 2:35, spanning eight plays while moving 62 yards.

The Blue Raider defense would force their first turnover of the game when Clay Chasteen knocked the ball loose from Point quarterback Nick Partlow. The fumble was recovered by Ben Kalu at the point 13-yard line. Despite the starting field position the Blue Raiders would come up empty when their field goal attempt missed.

The Skyhawks managed to put their first points on the scoreboard with 14:13 to play in the fourth quarter. Starting from their own 20-yard line, Point would drive the ball all the way to the Lindsey Wilson five-yard line before connecting on a 28-yard field goal.

Leading 27-3, the Blue Raiders next drive would start in great field position as Watkins was once again able to avoid tacklers on the kickoff. He returned the ball 63-yards to the Point 23-yard line. Despite reaching the 11-yard line during the drive, a holding call would push the Blue Raiders back before turning the ball over on downs at the 15-yard line.

Point's offense would take over on downs as they managed to drive 85 yards on seven plays. The touchdown was their first of the day and would trim the LWC advantage to 27-9 after their two-point conversion attempt would fail.

A three-and-out by the Blue Raider offense gave possession back to Point with just under eight minutes to play. The drive would reach the LWC 19-yard line before Point turned the ball over on downs when Micah Mazey's pass to the end zone was broken up by the Blue Raiders Stevie Miller.

The Blue Raiders managed to put the game away with a quick four-play 81-yard scoring drive. Dukes threw his third touchdown of the day - this one eight yards -- when he found Lewis in the corner of the end zone with 3:18 on the clock. Boyd would do most of the heavy lifting on the drive as he broke through the line and ran for 51-yards to the Point eight-yard line.
