LWC Volleyball wins season-opener against Asbury

The No. 9 Lindsey Wilson volleyball team defeated Asbury (KY) in a four-set match in the 2019 home-opener Tuesday night at Biggers Sports Center.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2:30pmCT on Friday, August 23, as the Blue Raiders face Point University (GA) in the Mid-South Conference Challenge at Ephram White Gym, 885 Mt Olivet Rd, Bowling Green, KY.


Against Asbury, Lindsey Wilson was led by senior Elly Burke who recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 digs and 14 kills. Peyton Johnston and Lauren Larzelere accumulated double-digit digs (13) as Alexis Smith was the other Blue Raider to record double-digit kills with 10. In her first match, LWC redshirt-freshman Kasia Niderla logged eight kills on 16 attempts while accumulating seven block assists and one solo block.

The Blue Raiders finished the defensive match with a .138 hitting percentage while limiting the Eagles to just .054.

It was a slow start for Lindsey Wilson (1-0) as Asbury (0-1) earned an 8-2 lead in the first set. This run was marked by two Lizzy Rempel kills and six errors by the Blue Raiders. The Eagles went on to win the opening set 25-20 while hitting .091 and forcing the Blue Raiders to hitting .097.

The second set began as a back and forth battle, including five ties and four lead changes in the first 22 points played. Lindsey Wilson earned their first three blocks on the night in the set as they would finish the game with 11-1/2 for the match. The Blue Raiders were able to escape the set while hitting just .036 and allowing the Eagles to hit .219.

Lindsey Wilson appeared to find their groove in the next set, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead. The Blue Raiders saw their lead dwindle to as few as two points but managed to extend it to 22-14 before winning the set 25-20. LWC posted a .250 hitting percentage and 13 kills. The pair of Niderla and Smith each produced four kills in the set.

The cohesive play continued for Lindsey Wilson in the fourth set, with their best hitting percentage of the night at .429 percent. The Blue Raider defense forced Asbury to hit -.207, while Burke garnered six kills in just 11 attempts in the set.
