Needle Exchange program gets positive review at Fiscal Court By Linda Waggener The local needle exchange program was on the July 9, 2019 Fiscal Court agenda. The County and City had given approval of Lake Cumberland District Health Department syringe exchange program at the Adair County Health Department in May of 2017 to help stop the spread of Hepatitis C and HIV. Presenting the statistics of the program were Exchange Program Director Rhonda Akin, RN, and by Health Educator Jelaine Harlow. They went into detail about the way tracking is done. They feel that the program is helping people, even beyond the needle exchange. They use only a one-to-one exchange program, requiring a used needle before a new one is given out. They work closely with Adanta so that help can be made available whenever treatment is requested. They noted that the basics of public health are changing to address families in crisis due to the effects of illegal drug use. Both jailer Joey White and Sheriff Josh Brockman spoke from their experiences in law-enforcement and offered to meet with the health department representatives to explore management in all three areas in relation to needle exchange and safe disposal in the future. All are in agreement that illegal drug usage is a crisis and touches nearly every family in the area and that more training is needed, especially for children from middle school up.
