Mayor provides June report of City activities

June Report of activities by staff of City of Columbia and Columbia Gas Department:



Did trimming and garbage pickup on Jamestown Street, Hurt Street, Harvey Street, Tutt Street, and Gaston Avenue.

We are continuing to do power washing. Lindsey Wilson Street, parking lot across from Municipal Building, and other areas.

No smoking signs were received from the Lake Cumberland Health Department. Thanks, Jelaine.

Our thoughts are with O.D. Frazier in the loss of his father this month.

Hauled brush at various locations. Mowed right of ways.

This included areas of Jamestown Street, Bomar Heights, Tutt Street.

Trimmed back branches on WAIN Street and Oak Street. (five loads).

Had a day to pickup mattresses and couches for city residents.

Caulked the wall adjacent to outside at Trabue Russell House.

Latch fixed at Trabue Russell House.

Our thanks to Mary Ann Loy and Carol Murphy, who are working with the gardens at the TR House.

Spread sand at city park at fairgrounds.

Boards down around playground equipment. Sign was vandalized and we are getting a new one.

Fixed commode twice at Little League Park. Have reiterated to park board that restrooms are to be locked at nigiht.

Landscaped around flag pole at city hall.

Had several trees destroyed by weather during the month that were picked up by the street department.

Extra signs for no smoking received from Jelaine Harlow with the Lake Cumberland District Health Department. Craig and Terry are putting up at Little League and City Park.

An additional approximately 40 letters were sent to property owners for nuisance violations.

A form has been completed that the Street Department will do that will tell location of mowing, hours, etc. It will be turned-in to Jada for billing.

Ronald Cook and I met with Eddie Brown of KenVirons. RE: project of Green Hills and Russell Springs Road. Also, reviewed far side of the overpass at "New Columbia."

Walmart did project at city hall on Wednesday, June 26. We appreciate their commitment to our community.

There is a street located off of Guardian that has a wall attached. We are looking at possible options for repair.

July 12 is Truck It Up. We will be raising funds for handicapped equipment for the city parks.

We will be working on an event to be held prior to school starting to help with backpacks for children. (City Hall/City Police).

Leading the Pledge of Allegiance at City Council meeting

Guests lead the Pledge of Allegiance at each month's Columbia City Council meeting. Serving at the July meeting were members of the Cumberland DeMolay Group sponsored by the Hood and Columbia Masonic Lodges.

State of Adair County's Health provided from LCDHD

Lake Cumberland District Health Department Educator Jelaine Harlow presented the latest health statistics on Adair County at the July 2019 Columbia City Council meeting.

Surveys show that Columbia and Adair County have made improvements in the areas of adults smoking, number of children in poverty and number of teen births. The score for adult obesity, unfortunately, is worse.

She shared priority health issues the LCDHD staff is working on now. The top four goals to continue health improvement are: Substance use, tobacco use, obesity and physical inactivity. The website for details is www.lcdhd.org and the phone number is 270-384-2286.
