Fiscal Court votes 5-2 in favor of Sunday alcohol sales By Tiffany Kessler Three years and several attempts later, a surprise motion made during Tuesday night's regular fiscal court meeting resulted in the passage of county-wide alcohol sales on Sunday. During the "Other Business" portion of the meeting, Magistrate Chris Reeder addressed the topic because he says business owners have been contacting him. "It doesn't make a difference to me personally," Reeder said to the court, "but I have business owners and there are more of them coming. It's not a matter of selling alcohol, it's now a matter of who is going to get the revenue from it." Reeder added a solid point concerning the new and continuous development of the shopping center on Burkesville Road. He used Magic Market gas station as an example. It is currently located in the county and cannot sell alcohol on Sundays. "You could literally throw a rock across the road and find a place to buy alcohol," he included in his argument. (The facing businesses are located within the city and adhere to their ordinance). Magistrate Daryl Flatt was honest about his stance on the topic. "I'll be the first to say I've rode the fence on this issue so much I have splinters." Before he second the motion, Flatt noted that he had been torn on the issue due to the initial vote count - part of his district voted wet while the other half voted against alcohol sales. In the end, he could not deny the benefits to the county. "The revenue part of it has really helped us and I know it has helped the city also. We still have a sheriff that is still driving his personal vehicle while he's waiting on cars. We're using [ABC] funds to help purchase those vehicles." John Thomas, owner of Anderson's Pizza and currently unable to sell alcohol on Sundays, was in attendance and made a statement during public comments. "If we don't amend this, I'm one reading away from being annexed into the city. You all will force me to take that route. I have no other choice, it's a matter of business." With the initial motion made by Chris Reeder and second by Daryl Flatt, Sammy Baker called for a roll call vote: Harold Burton - Yes; Daryl Flatt - Yes; Sammy Baker - No; Chris Reeder - Yes; Billy Coffey - No; Greg Caldwell - Yes; Terry Hadley - Yes The motion carried and the county will adhere to the same times as city alcohol sales - Sunday from 1pm to 10pmCT. This is one part of the June fiscal court series. Continue to follow Columbia Magazine as additional stories unfold. This story was posted on 2019-06-12 07:00:13
