Poetry by Robert Stone: Uncounted cost

Uncounted cost: a sonnet on a thirty-fourth birthday
Contrary to the rule of growing close,
Our knowing more may lead to knowing less,
Majestic likes outweighed by disliked gross,
Perceived intentions heard but tangled guess.

Extended conversation should conjoin,
Relate before unknowns in common thread,
Reflect those values neither would purloin,
Yield clues to making future hopes widespread.

Whatever wonders might be might be lost,
Effaced by quests beyond unspoken bounds,
Naïve suggestions with uncounted cost,
Deliberate insisting that there be more rounds.

Entirely set on what can never be
Leaves little chance that love will be set free.
~ Robert Stone, 29 May 2019
