Nelson Co. friends build and fire howitzer

The first time they fired the cannon at Jeep Coomes' machine shop on Nelson County's Harrison Fork Road, some golfers miles away at Cedar-Fil golf course heard it and came to see. There are still T-shirts hanging from the trees outside that Coomes and Steve Campbell shot into the sky.

"I got it in my head that I just couldn't live without a cannon," said Campbell, a retired deputy sheriff and collector of classic cars, Civil War artifacts and other odds and ends -- with the emphasis on odds. "I'm known for weird stuff," he explained, grinning. Campbell saw a Civil War cannon on YouTube and that's how it started.
